AK-47 question: Grease or Oil?

Having a discussion with some guys. They are claiming the Sov specified grease for the AK-47. The only detailed armorer's manual I've seen calls only for oil.

My question is does anyone have a manual that calls for grease on the AK? The closest I've found is the Sig 550 manual, but we all know how the Swiss love their black automatfett.

I thought they ran best with a heavy application of sand and oppression. :evil:

No, I don't have the manual, but would like to know too what Mother Russia felt was best.

Top it off with a little rust, and you've got a golden combination.




None of mine have ever complained with the motor oil treatment they get. They just tend to be a bit... smokey... the first few rounds through them :)

I can safely say that a certain chinese AK-47, that has had well over 10k rounds through it in full-auto, has had little more than an occasional wipedown, and still runs fine.


It's been run to the point of setting the handguards on fire, doused with water, then run again with never so much as a hiccup.


The bolt's a bit stiff to open when warmed up, but it has yet to fail to function in the thousands of rounds I've seen through it...
 
After cleaning, i spray some lithium whtie grease , the one in spray can from walmart cheap stuff. It lubricates the slide and bolt carrier . Runs like top .
 
In an AK, you could use veggie oil and it'd run just fine. I use Rem oil, 3000 rounds through 3 rifles without failure.
 
My best friend is from Russia. I doubt he remembers but i'll ask anyways. Saiga manual recomends a light coat of oil so i'd imagine that is what mother Russia says.
 
I would say, in real hot weather, some grease, sparingly and oil in other places. If during cold months, just oil, in my opinion.
 
I have what you could loosely term "a few" AK's. Some have been carefully lubricated with grease, others just randomly hosed down inside with RemOil or the like.

They all work just fine. Use what ya got. The main thing I have found is that especially when new they like to be wet.
 
I think grease holds dirt/grit more than oil. I'd go with oil... but i don't clean any of my AK's unless I shoot corrosive ammo.
 
A little tini bit of a light machine oil. Nothing in the piston.
Remember the AKs like to run dry and dirty unlike the ARs that like wet and clean.

In desert conditions reality calls for no oil at all or just rub and clean real well. Also excess oil with the cold at night makes it real bad. Sticks like hell.
Is this for anyone going to the Bad lands, Sahara or Afganistan?
Dry and dirty, the best.

Sorry for what mang? I have one with 11K rounds w/o a single malfunction. Hard to believe. that is the way it is.

68wj. Sorry I was short with you the other day. I had a bad day. I will post the 6.8 project when I have time, probably after the summer (kids, vacations, stuff).
