Ak 74 top hand guard removal

Hey guys,

Today I am having an issue removing the wood top hand guard from the gas tube on my waffen werks ak74, I tried the crescent wrench method and the vise method and all it resulted in was some sore hands. So what are my options here. Cut it off?
 
If you're very careful where you grip it, you can put the hand guard and gas tube in a padded vise and use a Crescent wrench on the square end of the tube.

You have to be careful to put the hand guard in the vise so ONLY the guard is gripped, and it's not touching the gas tube.
This will remove even the tightest guards, but as always when removing a tight guard there's always a risk of cracking the wood.

If this doesn't do it, something is wrong, such as a guard that's been glued on or something of the sort.

Another less rough method is to get a pair of thick rubber gloves and wear one to grip the guard while you use the wrench.
You can also use a rubber jar top opener grip pad.
