i would like to mount a small red dot on my ak but don't really want to have to drill into the receiver to accomplish this. i have been searching for forward mounts and the only one that looks like it would work is this one.

forward mount
from here.

the only problem is that it is currently out of stock and appears they won't be ordering anymore. i've already looked at the ultimak but my gas tube it too short so it won't work. if someone could steer me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

It's not a forward mount but requires no drilling and comes off easy, I put one of these on my dad's MAK90 for him.

B-Square's military scope mount for the famous AK-47 is for use with long eye-relief (pistol) scopes. No gunsmithing or gun alteration is required for this rugged mount. It has a standard dovetail so any Weaver-type, (included), or military device can be used, and it has elevation adjustment.

i've never seen that mount before, it looks like it may work for me after i ask a question. is the mount solid enough to main a set zero? i know the receiver cover is a terrible place to mount a scope but am unsure if the fire control retaining pins are a good place.

It's not connected to the cover, they give you replacement pivots for the trigger and hammer that are tapped on the ends and allow the allen bolts to screw in. the mount only touches pin ends and doesn't touch the receiver. It works real good even after you remove it so you can disassemble the action.

How about the Ultimak?

this is going on an amd-65 and as you may know the gas tube is too short for the ultimak to fit properly.

There are some Hungarian, and possibly some Yugoslavian, AKs that for some reason have a gas tube that is more than an inch shorter than standard. There can be no mistaking this short tube with the standard length gas tubes, as it barely extends beyond the upper handguard. We currently do not make a Mount for these oddball rifles.

that's from the website, if they did make a mount i would buy it. i like the look of the ultimak set-up but it's going to have to wait until i get a full-size ak.

i have an amd-65 parts kit built up on an OOW receiver and would rather not drill in the receiver to mount a scope rail. i thought i would be able to get a forward mount and stick a sight on there. i looked at the kobra and it's really a toss up between that and the eotech 500 series. i still need to shop around but for the money the kobra is hard to beat.
