AK part sets

Well with the ban gone and all, I've been pondering getting an AK underfolder or something similar. The parts count on an AK has been pretty scary, with an AR its match upper/lower and stuff happens. So I've got a few questions..

1. What receiver would I need to fit an underfolder parts kit onto?

2. Am I gonna need all sorts of crazy special tools to put one togather here?

3. I'm not a gunsmith, but I've got a pretty good handle on most things mechanical. Reguardless. on a scale of 1-10 how hard would this be?



Why dont I just buy one thats already built? Nobody builds them how I want mine built, and I think the idea of building a rifle from the receiver up would be neato keen.

I'm not an expert on any of this, but I am a massive fan of anything AK, and I have thought about buying various Kalashnikov kits, but a gun shop owner who I trust very much has told me that AK kits can be hit or miss, especially if you get an unscupulous dealer who will match and mix parts which may not exactly work properly together.

If you are good mechanically (which I'm not) you may be able to get by, but I think it would pay to be weary.

Go over to the AK47 forum at gunsnet. They have a couple of "Build it Yourself" forums that can answer all your questions. The better "Build it Yourself" forum you have to join & pay a nominal fee. Well worth it.

Yes, I second the Build it Yourself forum recommendation at ak-47.net's forums. Screw paying for the BIYI forum though, you can get all the info on the BIYII forum, no one even posts in the old one anymore, it's just a good archive now...

Underfolder kits are kinda scarce right now I believe, most everyone who had any advertised is sold out at the moment I believe...

Doing a "screw build" on any of the finished AK receivers is pretty simple if you have a good quality kit with the barrel still in the trunion. You won't need any special tools to speak of to complete one of these, a drill press, tap, proper screws, and a dremel are about it for tools for a screw build. You can also build from a 80% receiver with a bit more effort, either a flat (need a press/jig or rig up a way to bend em) or a "bent blank", which you drill all the holes/cut out the magwell, trim the rails, etc using a template. That's the route I went, I used a Coldsteel Inc standard .040 4130 bent blank (webaddy for coldsteel I had is down, but he has posts on the gunsnet forums under "coldsteel4us") If there are any underfolder specific issues as far as which bent blank or finished receiver to use you can read about them on that forum.

There are some do-it-yourself shadetree methods to get by some of the harder steps (which you can read about on the mentioned forums), but for the most part if you want to do a traditional rivet build you need a press and various jigs that seem to be hard to come by most of the time.

If you're wanting a underfolder you are aware that www.vectorarms.com offers underfolders, right? If that's not good enough what is it you're wanting yours set up like?

Well I want synthetic furnature, and a price around low 300s..the Vector Arms underfolders are nice but alittle too expensive in my mind,

not sure of whats availible for parts kits but if you already had the tools and skills build would be around $300-$400

you would need rivet tools to be authentic, alternative is to use hardened screws to fix the trunions to the receiver and other parts like trigger guard.

you will need a press to install the barrel into the trunion few have done it with long vise dont recall if anyone has managed with a hammer.

www.akfiles.com is another good sight with build it yourself section for the hobbyist.
