in tennessee a carry permit only gives you permission to carry a handgun
even in car no loaded shotguns or rifles
so im wondering 1) is the ak47 pistol classified as a handgun?
2)besides ar pistol are there other options on something classified as a handgun?

If it meets the federal definition of a handgun, it's a handgun (unless TN has some exclusions). The question I guess I'd ask, is what the hell are you gonna hit with an AK pistol? I think a more appropriate car gun is an 870 Marine Magnum or something along those lines.

US Code Title 18 Part 1 Chapter 44 Section 921
(a) As used in this chapter—
(29) The term “handgun” means—
(A) a firearm which has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand; and
(B) any combination of parts from which a firearm described in subparagraph (A) can be assembled.

Code of Federal Regulations Title 27 Chapter II Subchapter B Part 478 Subpart B Section 478.11
When used in this part and in forms prescribed under this part, where not otherwise distinctly expressed or manifestly incompatible with the intent thereof, terms shall have the meanings ascribed in this section. Words in the plural form shall include the singular, and vice versa, and words importing the masculine gender shall include the feminine. The terms “includes” and “including” do not exclude other things not enumerated which are in the same general class or are otherwise within the scope thereof.

Handgun.
(a) Any firearm which has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand; and
(b) Any combination of parts from which a firearm described in paragraph (a) can be assembled.

Pistol.
A weapon originally designed, made, and intended to fire a projectile (bullet) from one or more barrels when held in one hand, and having (a) a chamber(s) as an integral part(s) of, or permanently aligned with, the bore(s); and (b) a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand and at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore(s).

Revolver.
A projectile weapon, of the pistol type, having a breechloading chambered cylinder so arranged that the cocking of the hammer or movement of the trigger rotates it and brings the next cartridge in line with the barrel for firing.

Semiautomatic pistol.
Any repeating pistol which utilizes a portion of the energy of a firing cartridge to extract the fired cartridge case and chamber the next round, and which requires a separate pull of the trigger to fire each cartridge.

IIRC, TN revised it's rules recently and does allow a loaded rifle in a vehicle. This is copied from another forum:
The state of Tennessee just passed a new law. If you have a Tn handgun permit you can have a long gun (rifle/shotgun) in the car/truck. Loaded mags, loaded mags in weapon, loaded shotgun tube are ok. But, no round in the chamber.
I'm sure you can check to make sure.

your going to end up in court after a legal shooting.
do you want to look like a good person in a desperate situation or a total gun nut :banghead:
plus an ak pistol is far from the most suitable defenisve weapon on the market:(

Depends on the laws, woody. I don't know TN law, but in my state, we have no civil liabilty for a justified shooting, meaning the family/estate of the deceased may not sue. If he has that, it won't matter if he used a 50BMG rifle, as long as it was justified under law.
T'ain't the tool, it's how it's used.

Yes.

I have a AK pistol, two Kel Tec PLR .223 pistols and a Bushmaster Carbon 15 .223 pistol.

The AK and AR and especially the Kel Tec PLR pistols are formidable weapons. I don't care what I was armed with I would hate to go up against an experienced shooter armed with one of these guns

IMO they would make excellent HD and car guns except for one very large problem, the blast/noise from these guns is ear shattering.
I'd say, if you fired one of these guns in a small room or car your hearing will definitely suffer damage.

A good flash hider, like this Phantom, will eliminated the flash but the noise is still ear damaging.

Unless Tennessee has specific State regs that further restrict what is considered a pistol, an AK pistol is considered a "pistol" by Federal Law.

I have to admit... I am really drawn to those KT PLR's. It is like a lightweight, modernized AK pistol in 5.56. Cool factor is certainly there.

The PLR as mentioned

The sig 556 pistol

One of the shotguns that is technically a pistol from the factory.

For the 5.56 pistols my recommendation is a pair of ear plugs to keep with it. They are LOUD.

The PLR in my experience is reliable, reasonably accurate, lighter and thus easier to fire as a handgun than the others, and much cheaper than the sig or the AR. I would set it up similar to the one pictured above.
