Received a response, and in a rather timely manner I might add. Funny, the Federal Liberals didn't respond to my criticism of them, and my suggestion that if they didn't reverse their policy that I would not only vote against them but convince 10 other apathetic voters to vote against them.

I sent a similar letter to the Premier's office, but with the opposite slant; that since his timely and public opposition to Paul Martin's gun-confiscation announcement he had my life-long support as well as that of all I could convince.

Dear Mr. ______

Thank you very much for you December 9, 2005 e-mail regarding the Prime Minister's recent announcement to ban handguns.

While Alberta believes strongly in cracking down on violent crime, a ban on handguns is not the answer. Present Canadian law already tightly restricts the possession and use of handguns. This has had little effect on preventing criminals from obtaining and using these guns to commit crimes.

The Government of Alberta believes such a ban would only serve to punish legitimate handgun owners, while doing little or nothing to take the guns out of the hands of criminals. Alberta has not been consulted on what appears only to be an election promise, and we can confidently say the government would not support a handgun ban.

Out belief is that the governments need to concentrate their efforts on preventing the illegal cross-border supply of these weapons to criminals. Further, we need to send a strong message through tougher sentencing of those who commit these crimes.

In fact, at a recent meeting of Canadian justice ministers, Alberta committed to support these measures and we are looking to the federal government to back these meaningful initiatives.

I have provided the Honourable Ron Stevens, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, with a copy of your comments for his information as well.

Thank you again for writing,

Sincerely yours,
Ralph Klein
