Hi all. This is my first thread so please bear with me. I just bought an aluminum recurve bow off of ebay. The bow was made in the seventies. From what I understand there was a little fad with the aluminum bows for hunting back then but it died out. I was just curious why.

From what I understand the aluminum bows had a lot of desirable characteristics that people liked. Was there some major unforseen issue with them that caused people not to use them anymore?

Metal

Bending and flexing Aluminium stresses it and could cause it to break. In the early '50s Bear Archery laminated a strip of aluminium into some of their bows and the failure rate was very high. They are some thing of a collectors item as a result.

Every one of the bows like yours that I've seen was a wall hanger.Did you get the one with very narrow tips and the nice decals?

My bow is about .375 inch the entire length. solid aluminum, no lamination. Based on the amount of wear on the arrow rest, this bow has been used a lot.

It doesnt look like a wall hanger and it didnt come with decals.

Bow

There was an aluminium bow on ebay that looked like new, that was the one I was wondering about.Part of the fun of archery is that there is a lot of vintage equipment to mess around with.Have fun with your bow.

If you use it during the winter you are going to find out just how cold your bow hand can get. Wear good gloves or you will lose some skin on that bow. Voice of experience.
