Just looking at some results at ammolab and was wondering what depth of penetration do you like to look for.

Hohoho ....... ''Penetration, revisited''. Sorry - not tryin to demean your post.

Tell ya what dude ....... ''how long is a piece of cord''?? It's different things to all people ..... and one of the most contentious subjects we discuss. Not trying to put the question down ... but ..... there are as many views on this as there are M&M's in a giant pack.:p

DEPTH?? ........ guess the cop-out answer there ...... is ...... ''enough but not too much''. But of course circumstances alter events .... gun, caliber, distance, weight of target ..... and so on.

If damage is what we require (usually is) then penetration must be generous, if not total, to achieve said level of damage ... then comes in, all the variables like, where the shot hits ... the bullet design .... so many variables - too many to ever (IMO) be really definitive on this.

Pick a sample situation and weapon ... then maybe some specifics can be achieved .... otherwise ... it's one huge great ball park!:)

As I recall, the general standard is 12" minimum, and not greater than 18"'s. This is the standard used by the FBI, and most law enforcement agencies, and Nuclear Security Forces. I generally look for somewhere in the neighborhood of 14".

14" to 16" inches in ballistic grade gelatin is a good general rule of thumb for handgun rounds. The greater the mushroom effect while retaining as close to the original round weight, and still achieving that level of penetration, the better.

As others have said, the application may warrant a whole other set of requirements, however.

The FBI Ballistics charts are a good place to look to for good info.
