I need help with a crossword puzzle.

It asks for a type of ammunition named after its British inventor. Eight letters long. Any ideas?

My first thoughts were DeWilde and Buckingham, but they don't have the proper number of letters. The only one I can think of that DOES have 8 letters is "Richards", from Westley Richards, the patentee of the Richards All-Range bullet. Have you got any of the letters that cross filled in?

Oops. And yes, if you include artillery, Mk 7 has already mentioned "Shrapnel".

Someone skillful THR member should volunteer to create a weekly crossword puzzle -- firearms related , of course!

SGN has been running a crossword for some time now.

Just FWIW, the original Shrapnel shell was made with iron balls that were blown forward by an explosive charge as the shell approached its target. It was sort of like a large flying shotgun, and was intended for use against personel behind barricades. The word now is usually used to mean "shell fragments", which is incorrect.
