Ammunition Shortage

Nice article. AMAZING how few plants crank out the small arms ammo for the U.S.

This is why my mini-14 doesn't get much plinking this summer .

I hope there we'll be a HUGE wave of contract over-run at the end of this crap.

And, oh yeh, that the middle east situation will improve for of troops!

YES and the prices are going up too. Everyone I checked with is out of .223/5.56 and .308/7.62

"This is why my weapons are of Russian Surplus (for now)."

Yes, which is exactly why cheap Wolff and Tiger ammo is so bloody plentiful right now... Isn't it?
Does anyone have a line on cheap Russian ammo that isn't total crap?

What the article doesn't say

Is WHY are they using so much more ammunitiion? What are they shooting at?
I don't see much evidence that it is going into bad guys or maybe that is just not reported either

They are not just shipping it to the war zone. They have to replace the reserve stocks that they had. Just because we do not hear about it does not mean shooting is not happening. I would also imagine that trainning involving live fire has been ramped up.

News Shooter asked;
s WHY are they using so much more ammunitiion? What are they shooting at?

Because the training tempo has greatly increased since the days before the GWOT. Units that fired 5-600 rounds per man per year are now shooting thousands of rounds. This is a good thing.

Where would you expect to see this at? I have never seen any reports in the media about how many insurgents are killed and by what weapon.

Before the fall of the old Soviet Union we had a couple more government small arms ammunition plants. They were in mothballs, to be reactivated if there was ever to be a war. The administration in power at the time the Berlin Wall came down decided that the money that we spent on things like those ammunition plants could be better spent on social programs here at home. Obviously, we'd never have need for them . Everyone knew the world was a much safer place overnight. So we sold those plants and they were dismantled and the peace dividend was spent on domestic programs. I think we can all see how well that worked out....

I've seen that ammunition I want to buy is always unavailable or some super-duper-extreme-shock-terrorist ammo that costs an arm and a trauma plate to buy.

For instance:
Christmas = .32 Automatic. Do they have .32 ACP? One box of FMJ. Two boxes of high-priced JHP/HP rounds.

More recently: Wanting a .38 Smith Model 10-5.
Any .38? Some, yes... overpriced 'cowboy loads'. No LRN/FMJ, non +p stuff on the shelf. But I spot three or four boxes of .32 ACP - this is only natural, as the .32's firing pin is currently broken.

Ammunition shortages are geared towards whatever caliber you most want to get.

I remember during Vietnam

Every night the nightly news would lead with a graphic like this:

Killed

Viet Cong 1,303
US 24

It was nonsense of course, but it definitely gave you the impression we were actually winning
