An(other) idea for WI, coments welcome

I've got an idea I'd like to present.

I'm not terribly familiar with WI law, however it is my understanding that technically according to the law open carry is legal without a permit. I believe this includes on public grounds but not actually in the public building.

My idea; Has anyone considered an open carry demonstration on WI college campuses? Or just an OC demonstration in WI period?

Has anyone already looked into the possibility?

A major worry about open carry demonstrations is that all it takes is one guerilla from the other side firing a random shot from something, and there you go...

Possible scenario: You're in a park, you've got your 23 gun owners who actually showed up, and some _well meaning_ (because guns are bad, dontchaknow...) puts a BB through the Starbucks window... Blam. You just made the news.

And not in a good way. All that's gonna go is that "someone shot the window, but luckily nobody was hurt by the bullet."
 
Hmmm... good point bogie, hadn't thought of that...

How about this: Open carry of empty holsters .

Basically saying, "I'm a responsible citizen and would be willing to take on the
responsibility of defending myself and those around me, but I can't because the law forbids me."

An advantage of empty holsters is that they could be worn anywhere, including in public buildings.

One way of doing this that I think might be neat is to simply wear empty holsters for a day and go about your business, classes, etc and if people ask "What's that about?" begin a conversation about rights and self defense.

Also, you don't have to own a gun to wear a holster. After all, many of us have boxes full of holsters that could be loned out to people who would like to participate for the day but don't have their own.

Thoughts?
 
I wouldn't do anything on the campuses. There so terribly liberal it's not even funny. I'm sure something will be passed, Doyle's just blocking the way right now
 
At our January 27th meeting (which was open to anyone who cared to attend), volunteers for the Wisconsin Concealed Carry Association* discussed open carry marches.

It was generally agreed that, while open carry marches have value, now is not the time to stage such marches. This is not like Ohio a few years ago, where the state had a governor who was standing in the way of passage of a concealed carry bill.

Right now we have zero chance of getting a bill through the state Senate. Even if we did, Governor Doyle would still veto the bill, and we don't have anywhere near the votes to override that we've had in the past two legislative sessions.

So, those at the meeting agreed that we would address the open carry issue, but using different tactics. Whether those tactics will work is something we'll find out in the coming months.

*The Wisconsin Concealed Carry Association has undergone a name change. It is now Wisconsin Citizens for Personal Security. The reason for the name change was to take the focus off the issue of guns and put it on what this issue is all about: safety and security. At the January 27th meeting, we also elected a board of directors. The board of directors are now making plans to do things that go far beyond what the WCCA has been doing the last five years.
