The Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska finally came to his senses (aided by letters from several Alaska shooters and hunters) and withdrew from the Bloomberg coalition. This is the second Mayor to do so, following the gentleman from Idaho.

The good news in THIS case is that his withdrawal letter mentions "concerns about some of the efforts of the coalition" and "issues that conflict with the beliefs we have about legal gun ownership."

For those of you whose Mayor is still invovled - send this letter to him/her, ask them why they support an agenda that appears to conflict with your Constitutional rights, and don't let them weasel out of a real response!

I just sent this to my Mayor:

Dear Mayor Anderson,

I am dismayed at seeing your name listed as one of the “Mayors against Illegal Guns.” While the stated goals and the name of the coalition are noble, I am concerned that the goals of the coalition may run counter to extant rights outlined in the Bill of Rights. Despite claims from Mayor Bloomberg that “cracking down on illegal guns doesn't infringe on the Constitutional ‘right to bear arms," I am suspicious of those claims after reading the website.

For example the coalition’s support of “smart guns:” “Smart Guns” are an unproven technology which places an unnecessary burden upon legal gun owners. Why aren’t gun locks secure enough anymore? What will the coalition suggest to do about the millions of guns that do not sport this shiny new panacea? What will happen when the gun owner decides to will, or sell this smart gun? What will happen when criminals defeat this technology? I am concerned about the focus of this coalition on an inanimate object rather than the root cause of gun violence.

Also if it is agreed by coalition members that only a small percentage of gun dealers are responsible for the sale of guns used in crimes, why burden the overwhelmingly law-abiding majority for the crimes of a small minority? This strikes me as antithetical to democratic ideals. There are already laws in place to punish those who break existing laws. There are also existing laws that address every principle point on the coalition website.

Just as Mayor Bloomberg believes that it is false and “ideological nonsense” to choose between “respect(ing) the rights of gun owners or keep(ing) illegal guns out of the hands of criminals,” it is also false and ideological nonsense to believe that even more laws and feel-good technology will in any way deter criminals

Respectfully yours,

SuperNaut

Supernaut, your letter would make a great form letter for those with anti-gun Mayors on Blombergs list to be copied and pasted for... I know an original letter would be ideal, but for those lacking in literary skills, it would still get the point across... Great job!
