Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster.

I'm at a loss.

Used Sig 229 in .40, or New Springfield XD 40 Compact?

They're within $30 of each other.

Same caliber.

Same basic manual of arms. Yeah I know the SIG is a DA/SA decocker and the XD isn't. :p

But the Sig's a Sig man... Me, a Sig owner. Just imagine. :p

Seriously I'm at a loss here. I tried to see which one would cost less by the time I bought magazines, and even though the SIG only comes with one, by the time I bought another it's still comparable in price to the XD, which comes with 2.

The only slight nod I can give to the XD is that it is slightly shorter, and it has that flexibility to have either the short grip or the long grip depending on what magazine you stick in there. This appeals to me.

I don't think I'll be dissappointed either way, and I'm leaning slightly on the XD's side for that one feature. I won't be actually buying for a while, so I'm doing research. I've read lots of stuff posted here and it seems either one is a good choice.

But I must choose one. Now which?

I take it by your description that you're talking about an XD subcompact... Not the 4inch service model... (compact)

I believe if you want something that conceals best between the two then go XD... but if you want a range gun that you can conceal... then the Sig might be the better way to go between the two...

It'll probably depend on the condition of the Sig really... if it looks beaten to death, I'd stay away...

Have you looked in the CZ direction? they're great pistols and available in .40 in the compact and the 2075 RAMI is also available which is subcompact sized, and they come in around the same price as new XD's... the RAMI can be carried C&L or decocked... and the finish is MUCH better than that of the XD...

Correct The Drew. I should have specified. I suppose actually the service model is more like the 229, but if I buy an XD I'd get the compact.

Sig's should be in fine shape.

Thought about a CZ too, but I had to get it down to two choices. :D There's just too many good guns out there.

How do they feel in your hand? If you hold one at low ready, close your eyes, bring it up on target, and open your eyes, is it pointed where you think it should? How does it feel when fired? Follow up shots where you want them? If you set the pistol down and pick it up again and bring it on target does it shoot where you think it should? Same question for single versus double handed grip.

I recently went through this process and decided that it was worth about $100 in ammo, rentals, and range time to shoot what I was interesteed in and make my decision based upon my own experience of the pistols and not just what others think.

My opinion, and worth what you paid for it if you are lucky!

Enjoy.

Good points rwc:

1. They both fit the hand well. The Sig will accept an aftermarket grip that will make it very comfortable indeed and is probably the more comfortable of the two after that, but box stock the XD feels better.

2. They both point very well. They're both outstanding in that regard.

3. I've fired some pistols in similar configurations, same size, same caliber, same basic configuration mroe or less and I'm aware of how it feels to shoot one. Unfortunately these specific models are not available for my immediate use! :( The closest I can come is a similar SIG in 9mm and a service sized XD in 9mm.

The reason I'm asking is I want to see if anyone else has both and can tell me some things I might not be considering, etc.! It's true that you can't base your decisions on other people's opinions, but I'm just at a dead loss here! :banghead:

Its my first post here, and I can't speak for the springfield, but I absolutley love my sig 229, and I feel it is worth it to get that. It is an absolutely flawless gun. Many people do say good things about the springfields though, and you said that it fits your hand better. If you are going to get it strictly for self defense, maybe the sprinfield will work for you better, but if you are going to use it for the range I would say get the sig and get the grips.
