another innocent questn re revolver storage w/ desiccant

I was told that i can eliminate moisture & future rust problems on my revolver by putting silica gels/desiccant (the ones you see inside snacks/chips that says "do not eat").

Is this right? my s&w 627 came with a metal case & the inside is made of a spoked-like foam material in which i placed some of these desiccants inside,
which i assume wont do its job that much since the foam pretty much compress the things (revolver, grips, etc.) inside the case.

or do i just have to put my s&w in another safe place with these silica gels?

Any reasonably airtight container, including the case for your gun, should work fine.

Keep in mind that unless the silica gel is new in an airtight container, it may have already absorbed all the moisture that it can. It can be dried out and made useful again by heating it for a couple of hours at 275 degrees fahrenheit (125 Celsius). This will drive out all the moisture and renew its effectiveness. Some silica gel has a color indicator in it and will change from blue to pink as it absorbs water.
