I have read some nice things about this actor in the forums lately, regarding his political and gun-rights stance.

Well, I can't confirm the source of this. but if its true, here's a terrific reason to like this guy:

Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troops at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers that have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially burn victims. They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base but as you can imagine, they are almost completely filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it.

The question I have is why does Alec Baldwin, Madonna, Sean Penn and other Hollywood types make front page news with their anti-everything America crap and this doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper except the base newspaper in San Antonio......

Hope I can find the source.

I wish more would be like that. Makes me feel better to know that not all actors are dicks.

There was a list of pro-gun and anti-gun actors soemwhere i dont know where though.

yeah

Well, if it was still one of the most "substantial" donations in the history of the Fischer Houses, I still like him.

Well apparently didn't happen.

Read the article there fella. It did happen, all except the hype about writing the check on site. He wrote the check later. Still worth an honerable mention.

why do people take "snopes" as the gospel?
At least snopes tries to verify these stories and not just forward every bit of glurge and spam that comes along as "gospel". They also list references in their articles.

A local radio station did a fund raiser for the Fisher House this past Christmas. They raised enough to build a new fisher house which iirc was a few million bucks.

so who is "snopes" and how are they funded? I guess I'm getting too skeptical in my old age and wondering why they should be believed over anybody else

Star fulfills vow to Fisher House
Washington, wife make 'significant' gift, will serve on the military family foundation's board

FORT SAM HOUSTON - Months after visiting a military hospital and promising to help families of wounded U.S. soldiers, actor Denzel Washington has come through in a big way.

Washington gave one of the biggest donations ever made to Fisher House Foundation Inc., which operates guest facilities for families with loved ones recuperating in military hospitals, an official at the nonprofit said Wednesday.

"Denzel and his wife, Pauletta, did send us a check with their donation," said James Weiskopf of Rockville, Md., the foundation's vice president for communications.

"While we do not disclose the amount of a donation without approval from the donor, we can acknowledge that it is one of the most significant received in our history," Weiskopf said.

Washington and his wife also accepted the foundation's invitation to serve on its board of trustees, he said.

The actor's involvement with Fisher House resulted from a stop six months ago at Brooke Army Medical Center, where many troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have been treated for injuries.

During the December visit, after learning Fisher House provides inexpensive lodging and other support for recuperating soldiers' families, Washington vowed to help the organization.

The pledge was captured — and convoluted — by the Internet rumor mill and within weeks a widely circulated e-mail, which was exchanged throughout the service ranks, erroneously stated Washington pulled out his checkbook at Brooke and made a huge donation on the spot.

The e-mail had a life of its own, said Fisher House officials, who were barraged with inquiries about the donation and how it would be spent. Efforts to clarify that the donation was promised and still pending often were ignored.

Weiskopf said the Washingtons' gift, received several weeks ago, was "undesignated," meaning the couple didn't specify how the money should be used. That decision will be made by the board, he said.

Because the foaming-at-the-mouth psychopathic America-hating leftists control the press and decide what is and what is not news. All the while, the 'fair and balanced' so-called 'conservative' press is too busy being George Bush's loyal lapdog.

Has'nt the press ALWAYS been that way, even from the founding of the Republic? EVERYBODY had an agenda, it is up to the reader/viewer/listener to filter out the chaff. I'm just glad that we have the tools available to cross check stuff with relative ease via the Internet.

As for Denzel Washington, I was impressed with his acting skills when I first saw him in Glory. This is more motivation to see more of his work.
