Listen up, Fudds. They want you gun too.

NBC Commentator Mocks Hunters: On Sunday’s The Chris Matthews Show, the host used one of Mike Huckabee’s Iowa photo-ops as an excuse to launch into an elitist attack on Republicans and hunters. “Who made killing small animals the test of Republican manhood?” Matthews challenged at the top of his show. Over a clip of a vintage Looney Tunes cartoon, Matthews further upped the ante: “Who declared war on Bugs Bunny?!” (An awful lot of Americans seem to believe that meat is manufactured in the same factories that make the styrofoam trays in which they buy it.)

Can we dial down the paranoia? Please? This is a commentary about Presidential photo-op politics, not a desire to take people's guns away.

Matthews went on: “It used to be that candidates had to show they liked eating the local food — you know, the blintzes, the Coney Island hot dogs, the Philly cheese steaks. But nowadays they gotta like killing their supper!”

After reviewing how Mitt Romney claimed to be a lifelong “varmint hunter,” how Democrat John Kerry wore a goofy camouflage jacket on a 2004 hunting trip, and how then-gubernatorial candidate George W. Bush shot an endangered bird back in 1994, Matthews played the Bugs Bunny card: “So do Republican voters really believe that using a big gun to kill small varmints really makes someone more qualified to be President of the United States? It all reminds me of Bugs Bunny and good old Elmer Fudd.”

It's a little bit off to use Huckabee to launch on this screed - I actually believe he's likely a hunter. Mitt Romney, who's probably actually never hunted once in his life, would be a better choice. But political talk shows make hay about what's going on right now. What happened even a week ago is ancient history.

Don't mistake Matthew's hot air for something it's not. It's just hot air - he bloviates all the time on his show. And it's taking aim at all the ridiculous Presidential photo ops, not gun ownership, and not hunting.

he is picking on hunter's manhood, he's inferring that mean old hunters need to kill small cute little animals to feel better about themselves, and that they use oversized guns to make up for undersized...

No, he's not - he's making fun of Presidential photo ops. This is pretty much exactly equivalent to the punditocracy's reaction to Hilary Clinton's manufactured laughing fits on the Sunday morning talk shows. It's about "image management" and Presidential campaigns, and why for some reason Presidential candidates feel compelled to be seen as hunters - as if that has any relevance to being a good President.

They probably just picked on Huckabee because nothing else of note happened in the past few days.

Matthews is a hot air ballon. I wouldn't pay him much mind.

Listen up hand ... I am a FUDD. I dont care about your games , I dont care about your fine tac mods . Oh and by the way my vermin rifle is an ar-15. Deal with the fact that i dont own tac rails , porch lights , vertical fore grips , or in fact knee pads but i still support all of the 2nd . and do me a favor .. stop your bull**** insults to me because i dont choose to play cops and robbers on a range with live ammo .

Redneckrepairs, I think you're missing the meaning of FUDD.

Fuddishness is not about what you DO, its about what you BELIEVE. Around here, the generally accepeted definition of a FUDD is one who hunts and owns guns, but doesn't see the need for civilians to own those nasty assault weapons. No one is dissing you because you aren't a mall ninja.

Fudds generally believe that once the antis get rid of all those nasty assault weapons, they'll stop and leave the nice responsible hunters alone to enjoy their walnut and blued steel hunting guns. They believe that the Second Amendment is there to protect their right to hunt. WRONG!!!!

If you hunt with an AR, you definitely aren't a Fudd in anyone here's book. Even if you don't own an AR but believe that the 2nd A isn't about hunting, you won't be considered a Fudd.

So lighten up, Elmer. :)

j/k, had to be a smarta$$, can't help it, its who I am.

What color is the air on the planet where you live?

I strongly disagree, as I've run into this attack many times by ultra-liberals. “Who made killing small animals the test of Republican manhood?” That is a variation on a theme I've heard many times. It is absolutely, and unequivocally an attack on manhood. The implication, (and outright statement I've run into from ultra-liberals) is that hunters are compensating bullies.

This is nothing new.

I agree with siglite. The photo-op may have provided the bashing-op, but the smear goes far broader than goofy politicians looking out of place in Iowa corn fields (not speaking to Huckabee, he probably does hunt).

Ya gotta wonder why the frothing grabbers always come around to penis size? Maybe its projection.

I've watched Matthews off and on for years, usually in very small doses, because that's all I can stand. He is very anti private ownership of any type of weapon beyond a single shot shotgun for the igornant rednecks out in the middle of nowhere (like me). He's pretty much the archetypical elitist liberal.

Personally, I don't much care for the pandering all the candidates do on all sorts of issues. If you hunt, hunt. If you don't, don't.

The antis keep trotting out that old saw about how gun owners are sick because they think of their gun as a sexual organ. But who's sicker someone who thinks of his gun as a sexual organ, or someone who wants to take everyones sexual organs away?

Learnt me a new word today.I like that.I had NO idea bloviate existed.I like it, sounds a little like blowhard, which is pretty close to the same meaning, and does accurately describe Mathews.I also like "punditocracy".I'll have to remember that one. Thanks Foosinho.

On topic, it seems like the guy was ragging specifically on hunting/hunters than anything. He does mention both parties, and several candidates from each, but he certainly did also seem to keep coming back to it being a republican thing, like republican voters are all a bunch of inbred yokels, and we'll only vote for someone who acts like us, which is why all republican candidates pretend to be hunters, to get our vote. Then sorta offhandedly mentions that even a few dems are doing it now too, to steal some of the republican inbred yokel vote.

Actually, thinking about it some more I guess it doesnt really matter if it was hunters or republican candidates, or republican voters he was trying to slam the most, all it does is make the guy a stereotyping moron, and complete a@#.Especially to those of us who ARE republican voters, and ARE hunters, yet somehow arent inbred yokels loaded on moonshine, and can resist the feminine wiles of our cousins and sisters
