I have an old Savage 99 that my dad gave me when I was 11. Long story short, it was his old rifle, but he quite using it because he broke the stock on it and went with a M70. When he gave it to me, he replaced the stock, it never really fit correctly. Over the past 10 years I have gone through about 4 butt stocks that I could never quite get a good fit with (semi-inlet). With age I have come to accept two things...I am OCD and I don't have the ability to work wood.

I really would like a correct fitting stock for this rifle, but don't have the ability to do it myself. Is there any place you know of that if I send them my rifle, they will fit a stock to it...one that actully has proper metal to wood fit?

Thanks in advace!

Richards Microfit is another....although not by personal recommendation.

Hit the local gun shows too. There's always 3 or 4 vendors in my area that have a wide assortment of stocks.

I've had good experiences with Richard's Microfit. They do the fitting for you but you have to do the finishing. If you are comfortable with that you can get a stock shaped and sized for you for not too much coin.

Boyds is a good recommendation; just be sure to measure the tangs on your rifle first so that you can order the correct stock.

Bear in mind that the stock may still need fitting no matter where you turn, since there were build variances in these rifles over the years. These stocks are very similar to O/U shotgun stocks, and have similar fitment needs. For example, I have never found a stock for a Savage 99 that did not need some work to trim/shape the inner sides of the front (the ears that cover the receiver internals), especially on the left side where the rear of the bolt reciprocates.

If you're uncomfortable doing the fitment, you will need to find a gunsmith that has the proven ability to fit an O/U shotgun stock to do it for you.
