I am wanting to test some loads for my AR tomorrow and I thought maybe I could get more accuracy from brass jagging my ARs like I do my 308 long range guns. So Wednesday I picked up a 22 cal brass jag and today I jagged my ARs with bore solvent.

While doing this I was wondering if it was really worth the extra labor to jag after every so many rounds? I bet not too many folks use a brass jag to clean their ARs, hell brass jags aren't even in military cleaning kits.

So my old routine has been Bore Snake after small range sessions and patch with solvent and brass brush after larger range sessions. Perhaps if I notice any difference I may incorporate jagging into my cleaning regime.

when i clean my ARs, which is dang near never, i use jags after a lot of brushing

All I normally use. I push a Tetra or CLP'd patched jag through 3 or 4 times after I get home from shooting. That is all the care my bores normally get.

I'll assume by "jagging" you mean using a wrap-around type jag instead of a slotted-tip attachment that you usually find in a cleaning kit. If so, this is all I ever use on my match AR, with Butch's Bore Shine being my prefered solvent this summer. I'll brush it every 200-300 rounds and JB-ed it after Perry because I didn't think it would hurt it at that point. I can't remember if I used the JB again for winter storage.

Whether or not it hurts or helps accuracy, I'm not so sure. It always seems as though the barrel needs a few rounds to settle after a deep cleaning, but is less affected by a quick solvent and patch treatment. As always, YMMV.

Jags are what I use and always thought that they were just a better alternative to the looped tips. The only brush I use on my AR is the chamber brush, just because it's the easiest way to clean the extension.

You really don't need to clean the barrel until accuracy falls off with precision rigs. With ARs that have chrome lined barrels, I very rarely clean them and when I do, the only attention the bore gets is a few patches or a bore snake if I have one handy.

I use a jag. I think it helps with the bore a bit, and my gun likes the bore cleaned after a while. But, it is a varmint gun.

Other than being a magnificent opportunity to get a cleaning rod stuck in the bore because the patched jag is so insanely tight, somebody please tell me what a jag does, that ten strokes with a bronze brush and a good copper solvent won't do.

I almost always use a brass jag on on my guns. I hardly ever take a bore brush to them.

A little Hoppe's, Breakfree CLP or SLIP 200 EWL on a patch pushed through the bore with a brass jag is about all the bore maintenance I perform.

Boy...I've made THAT mistake!! It sucks when you get one 1/4 of the way in and the rod gets stuck. Sometimes the patch just goes in funky and gets real tight. Nothing that a dead hammer wont solve!!
