Went to the gun show and picked up a case of 5.56x45mm ammo with a head stamp that reads: HCC 84. All I know is that this stuff is 55gr and I believe it is made by prvi partisan I am thinking it was made in 1984 hence the 84 on the head stamp.

I am not sure if it is actually 5.56 or .223 as it was marked .223/5.56 by the vendor, who did not know very much about this ammo: it was cheap, it was clean, and it was not reloaded so I bought it.

It has a red sealant around the primer, and is non-corrosive according to the vendor.

I have a few questions:

-Is this true 5.56 or .223, if 5.56 was this surplus ammo?
-how does this shoot; I can shoot pretty good, will this keep up with me?
-what is the muzzle velocity of this stuff?
-Is it reliable (any duds)?

I just want to get a feel for what I bought; it came lose in an old ammo box for .30cal 8 round clips for garand ammo (box might be ww2 or Korean war era? but that isn't important) there were no papers, factory packaging, or anything describing it. All I have is the head stamp on the ammo to go by... thanks

.223/5.56

Do not use 5.56 in a gun chambered for .223. The 5.56 has a longer case neck which may cause the bullet to be crimped between the case neck and the forcing cone in the barrel resulting in danger high pressures.

No. The 5.56 chamber has a longer throat and shallower leade which prevents hotter loads from spiking in pressure. A .223 load in a 5.56 chamber will produce a lower peak pressure than the same load in a .223 chamber. On the other hand, the shorter throat and more abrupt leade of the .223 can and will cause excessive pressure when 5.56 loads are fired in it. The allowable pressures are equal between the two, but the chamber of the 5.56 allows for a hotter load within those pressure limits.

HCC is ammo loaded by Privi Partisan for the Hansen Cartridge company. The link is the source of that info and the rest of the post is a copy/paste from that source.
