Anyone ever use this to make caps?

With caps as unobtainable as primers now, I'm thinking of making my own. While looking at .22 WMR reloading, the website I was looking at also had a percussion cap maker that punches caps out of aluminum cans.

I hope somebody here has tried this. Worth the $50?

I love the concept...

I bought one this summer and tested it out. There is a knack, but it isn't hard to learn and you can pop out cap cups in short order. Filling the caps with primer mix is a little tedious, but not bad at all. I tested them out in a range session and the dozen caps I had made all worked just fine in my TC side locks.

Nice. The caps look a bit rough coming out of the punch, did you try smoothing them out or did you run them as is?

So how many caps can you make with the order of powder and acid do you think??

No idea. Probably depends in part on how much of the mixture you put in the caps. I suspect I was a little generous as the caps seemed pretty hot. If you email the manufacturer I am sure they could give you a range. If you do, please let us know what they say.

Yeah i got one of these years ago from the same company. Its better to use .005 (36 gauge) copper sheet that you can get in a roll from hobby lobby because aluminum sheeting makes a poor quality cap...doesnt kwep as much hot gasses sealed in the nipple when the cap explodes. I make my own primer mix that is essentially the old Frankford Arsenal h-48 formula only without the ground glass...its more like the h-42 formula. I also did a write up on how to use it with roll caps.

You can also buy these and use them as is.

Or take the fun parts out, and put them in your home made caps.

I have used them as is, and they will work!

Thanks, but no thanks, they wouldn't be cost effective at all. The priming mixture that the website that sells the cap maker to says you can get 2 thousand caps out of $20 worth of priming mix they also sell.

The prime-all mix they sell is a rip off...that being said it actually makes more like 4000 caps. The 2000 caps is if you fill the caps with more priming powder than needed. You can buy thw 3 main ingredients per pound and they are very inexpensive. All together its 30-40 bucks for a full pound of each ingredient. I listed the ingredients and formula in a previous posting. You dont need the other additional junk ingredients thats includwd with the "prime-all" packet, you just need the 3 main ingredients. Makes the same priming compound used in old corrosive primers used up until WW2. I make these caps all the time so i dont have to use my stash of my good Remington #11 caps.

Thanks for all that

The Kid has it right. You only need about 1/4 of the cap cup with powder. If you use more it will sound more powerful but most of that power will be wasted and blow out around the outside of the nipple. I do happen to use the pop cans for the cups. I will only make them with two layers though. Tougher and more power will get through the nipple. This has been a long time hobby for me. Failures for a long time. Now total success and all the power you could want .

I wish I had of known about the outlaw kid recipe a long time ago. I had a Tap O Cap set I gave away because I could never get it to work. But it did make nice looking caps. I just bought all the caps I could find a few years ago and now have more caps than I’ll ever need. I have 8,000+ caps on hand now.

I have a Kevin the Cap Maker #11 cap maker die, and it works well but is tedious. I use a roll cap, a bit of 3F powder, and another roll cap. The hard part is getting the roll cap 'circle' into the cap hull. I've found that I have to use pie tin material rather than soda can material because the die punches right through it. I assume Kevin still makes them, but not sure.

I highly suggest getting the .005/36 gauge copper sheet roll from hobby lobby...that stuff is the perfect cap material. One roll cap and 3f powder or even 4f powder work great. The method i find best is to shave the priming dot off of the cap roll...its easy to do with a razor...i show and explain this in my cap making thread. Shaving the dot off keeps that extra paper material out of the nipple flash hole...you want the least amount of paper. Once you have the dot shaved off...put it in the cap hull...then cover it with a layer of 3f or 4f black powder...then cover it with a rice paper disk sized at 5/32 wide. You can then use hair spray if you want to keep it the cap. Its a little bit more tedious and doesnt handle being tossed around in a cap tin well...but it works. So long as you arent rough with the caps they stay together and work great. If you use the roll cap with the thick paper backing it tends to clog the nipple...so thats why i recommend shaving to priming dot off of roll.
