just got back from a local sporting goods chain (went to buy boots). while there i spoke with the gun/hunting clerk and looked at a standard Mossy 590 (wife wants one, long story). and then asked if he knew of a source for or even IF a 590A1 trigger guard and Safety "slider" (don't know right term) could be bought and installed.

his response was to the effect of "you won't get the parts from mossberg, and you won't get a 590A1 either. they're only gonna sell em to LEOs!! " he claims that, the mossy sales rep that deals with their chain has stated that the 590A1 is no longer going to be sold to anyone without a badge, and that Dept letterhead WILL be required.

now i'm sorry but that strikes me as being complete BS, or possibly a smoke screen on the part of the sales rep to keep from saying "we won't sell YOU (the chain) any without that b/c we don't think you'd sell enough to bother with".

anyway i thought the regs stated that unless it was a gun covered under the NFA or AW ban that that even the "LE only" stamped guns were fair game (i KNOW the savage 10FPs so marked, are)??

maybe i'm a little over sensitive b/c in my case i'm interested in it because of my wife, and as i understand it the difference in a 590 and a 590A1 is that the A1 uses metal instead of plastic for the trigger housing and safety. and if this is so then there is no reason at all for THAT to make it an item less suitable for "civilian" use.

oh and just to cover the obvious, i don't take ANYTHING that a clerk in a store like that says as resembling reality much less as gospel. and also in the 3 years i've leived in the region that store serves i have NEVER seen a 590A1 on the rack. seen plenty of regular 590s but never the upgraded version.

so what's the word in the world?? is this guy blowing smoke out his posterior or is mossberg reallly going to pull the better version of their HD shotgun off the civy market??

thank you for you time adn your indulgence of my lack of knowlege. :)

Huh, I just bought one a few weeks ago and the store owner said they're flying off the shelves. I wouldn't put too much faith in getting information from "sporting goods chains." They tend to have good prices and occasionally they have surprisingly good selections but the clerks usually know less about firearms than the average soccer mom.

Between the ignorance of the chains and the arrogance of many dedicated gun stores, buying firearms has become an extremely painful process.

Huh,

just checked gunbroker and auction arms. only two for sale, on gunbroker. One has 14" barrel ($575), one has 6 shot magazine ($175).

Thought there'd be more.

figured as much....

sometime in the next few days, i'm gonna go by the dealer, that i intend to buy the gun through anyway, and ask HIM what the deal is. right now there are 4 shops in my area that stock the "A1" model, the guy i'm going through who has good prices and informed staff, two shops that over charge and have poorly trained staff of varying types, and one shop that is geared almost exclusively to LEO needs (has the words "cop shop" in neon in the front window) .

and i just checked Mossbergs website, the 590A1s listed in the "law enforcement section" are there only as examples no where on the site does it say that the A1s are "LEO only" though i imagine that the little cruiser gripped NFA sawed off is not gonna go to a non-leo.

the pricelistings also show the 590 special purpose and 590A1 special purpose (the version i'm interested in) right next to each other with no notation of being restricted.

and again it appears that "A1" simply designates the upgrade to metal fire-control group and safety. somebody's been blowing smoke up someonelese's rear. be it that clerk or the sales rep who supposedly told him that rubbish.

I've got a Mossy 590A1 with 18.5 bbl on it. My FFL runs a police supply shop and sells almost exclusively to cops, but had no trouble at all with selling to me, a non-LEO. If I'd cared to pay the $200 tax stamp, I probably could have her order a 14" bbl version for me as well.

I just recentley bought an FN Police shotgun and nobody gave me any flack for it. As long as it doesn't violate any AW ban or any other law its alright. There is nothing wrong with liking parakrized firearms. :D
