Hello

It seems that i will be on a business trip trip to USA later next month. Most of the time will be spent near Salt Lake City (in Draper, to be precise)
My stay will be around 2 to 3 weeks, so i'm seeking advice on following:

1. Any places in Draper or close to it where i can rent some guns and have some fun on weekends?

2. It seems that the home town of the Great JMB (Ogden) is relatively close to Draper. Are there any public transportation means to get me from Draper to Ogden, or shall i rent a car (if yes, what will be estimated price; where to rent one?). I really, i mean REALLY want to see a John Browning museum!

3. What are general points in interests in and around Salt Lake City?

Any other advice is also appreciated.
Thanks

MAX! This is AWESOME! Correia and PvtPyle's shop, FBMG, is in Draper!

Holy crap. Let us know when you're going to be in town. Utah has a pretty active THR community, so I'm sure between all of us someone can play tour guide.

As for getting around, Utah actually has pretty good public transportation. Busses, vans, and a surface train downtown. Things to see? Well, a ton of parks, the Temple, plenty of historic sights. PM me and I'll give you more detailed info.

Nightcrawler, thanks for heads-up.
Now the ball is at US Consulate - they should decide if an old SOB like me, with previous military background and a special skills in firearms should be allowed to the land of democracy.
As far as it's planned, ETA is March 18th.

If that doesn't work, just hop on a flight to Mexico and run across the border. You might get social security and voting rights when you get here then. Zing! Topical humor!

Seriously, though. I'll be happy to show you around as I can, but...I've not lived here for a year yet. I'm still at the stage where if the destination is too far from the Interstate I need a map...

That's great news Max! Maybe you could get together with Nightcrawler and Corriea and help them develop a new character from Russia to write about or add some Russian flavor into their writing repertoire...

Well, a boy can dream. :p

Here's to hoping the US consulate says "Come on Down!" (or over)

Max, yes, my gunshop is in Draper. We don't have a range yet, but we can point you in the direction of all of the fun stuff. Let us know when you're coming. We have another machine gun shoot scheduled for April.

Baba Louie, the literature consultations can be made via Internet - i did that several times before. heck, i've wrote a book co-authored with Tony Williams not ever seeing him in person. that's the Internet was invented for, after all ;)

Still, i would be more than happy to talk in person with all nice people i've met here.

Correia, thanks! I will contact you as soon as i will have firm date of arrival.

max, now I've gotta find that/those books you've helped out or authored. Give me a clue. Love to read 'em.

Ok, folks, the Uncle Sam decided to let me in. So far ETA is March 19th, but I will keep you updated.

beware, Amerika, Russians are coming

Bring souviners! I'd really like a KGB, GRU, or Spetsnaz field manual. I don't care if it's in Russian, I just want to show it off.

Oh, and bring your camera. I'd really REALLY like to get my smilin' mug published in a Russian gun magazine. :neener:

Hey, Max! Good to hear that you're coming.

There are a couple of cool things to look at in Ogden-- there is the gun museum in the Union Station in Ogden, there is JMB's grave in the Ogden cemetery, and if you are willing to drive a little bit farther, there's the Browning Museum in Morgan, UT.

You wouldn't want some company on the trip, would you? :)

Anyway, hope you enjoy the stay!
Wes

Ok, guys, here's good news.
After some 30 hours of flying, running across airports and passing security checks i'm finally here in US of A.
For next 2 weeks i will stay in Marriott courtyard in Sandy / Salt Lake city - it's always good when company pays for your hotel bills ;)

As I said before, I'm looking for a place to rent and shot some guns in SLC area, and also planning an obligatory JMB worshiper's visit to Ogden this Saturday

Also, i will be happy to see some of local THR member just for a chat and maybe a beer, if you can guide me to the good place.

BTW, can anyone enlighten me on knife carry laws in UT? I'm so used to the weight of a good folder clipped to my right trousers pocket... I brought one in the luggage, and if it's legal, i'd like to carry it here too - just to feel myself "at home" ;)

Go ahead and carry it. Everybody I know carries a folding knife. But then, I only hang out with cool people. :D

We'll have to get you over to FBMG on Saturday. Well, you're welcome to go before that, but Saturday's my day off. I'm so awesome that no trip to Utah is complete without meeting me. Seriously. :D

Sadly, the rental scene is pretty weak here at the moment. I only know of 3 ranges in Salt Lake County that rent anything. Doug's Shoot'n Sports in West Valley (a very dirty range), Impact Guns out in Kearns (I don't think they have anything interesting to shoot there), and Rangemasters down in Springville (MP5K and UMP are the interesting ones I recall, they may have more now).

There are a couple of places threatening to open Uber-Ranges (FMBG and Get Some) but nothing is ready yet.

As far as gun stores, you can do pretty well just hitting the ones along the I-15. If you are in Sandy, you can hit quite some good ones pretty easily. I would head down to 7200 S and I-15. On the east side of the freeway you have Sportman's Warehouse and on the west side you have Get Some. Then you can head down to 124000ish south to FMBG. From there, I would drive to Lehi to the Cabela's store and check out the gun library there. Plan on a couple of hours there.

That's really all that is worth hitting going south. If you actually make it as far as Orem, you can swing by Gunnies or Van Wagenen's, but I wouldn't make the trip just to see them. Same with Rangemasters in Springville. Quite a drive unless you want to shoot their full-auto stuff.

If you swing out to the west part of the valley, Doug's and Impact are out there. Doug's has a pretty good selection. Impact is disappointing.Maybe their Ogden store is better, but the one in Salt Lake isn't worth it unless you are in the neighborhood.

A rarely mentioned, but pretty good, place right in downtown SLC is Gallenson's.

Maybe someone further north can let you know if there is anything up that way.

Good luck.
