I'm going to be a cowboy shooter soon.

For the last couple years I have been getting the things that I need
to shoot some cowboy style shooting

Got my guns
have thousands of rounds loaded and ready to go
got my hat and boots
My father in law is getting ready to start on my leather needs.

don't think i will make it this year but for sure next year when it starts

And the best part of it is that my 2 daughters are interested in doing it also:D

Couple years gone, this year going, next year maybe?

Time's a'wastin, boy. Go NOW. You will regret every weekend you have missed. You can get a cheap rig to get you by until your father in law gets off his duff.

It is a common mistake for people to think everything has to be perfect before they start into organized competitive shooting. They have to have the "right gun", they have to "practice" more, etc. No, they don't. They need to show up, get acquainted, PAY ATTENTION, and learn the ropes.

Small folding lawn chair and a GUN CART with an UMBRELLA! (Goshdarn some of those matches get HOT and it's really nice to have some shade).

Lot's of folks selling gun carts. I've built both of my own though and it's not too tough if you have any woodworking skills at all. Usually finding good wheels is the toughest part.

Other than that I go with what Jim says...get out there and try it!

I was going to, had a revolver all picked out to buy this fall, practice with this fall/winter, then head out next season...

Yeah, not any more. Still looks like fun, but then I was told I had to get 3 more guns, plus all the other gear. Overall, the startup cost puts this sport way, way out of my reach for now. :(

My only issue with shooting 'cowboy style' is having to look like a polygamst :) The group was shooting at the range on Saturday that I frequent and althought it'd be fun to shoot with those guys/gals - I just don't want to wear the gear.

Jeans, boots, a long-sleeve shirt, and a hat. My boots are Redwing ankle-high lace-ups. Show up, and it's likely folks will fall all over themselves to lend you gear for the day. You can say what you will about the gamers, but they are a swell crowd.

Go to a match now. Do not wait till next year. Do not wait till next month. Go to the next match you can. Whether or not you've got all the gear or not, go immediately.

As far as dressing like a polygamist... you can dress like anything you want. From gambler in top hat and tailcoat, to railroad engineer, to working cowboy. Heck, dress in braids, loincloth, moccasins and paint if it pleases you. I've seen it done.

As far as costs go, a basic setup can be had for $1100 dollars or so. A full set of race ready gear might go for more on the order of $3200. If you get into silver plating, gold inlay, custom engraving and other such things, then the sky's the limit, as in any other activity.

I made my 1st shoot last month. I wish I had taken the time to go watch one 1st. Maybe I wouldn;t have been so nervouse on stage one. Some how I managed to pull both triggers on my double barrel. What a bang that was. It went away after 1st shot fired. I had been a member of SASS for almost 2 years before I made my 1st shoot. Its not 5 am yet and I am just rambling. Get out there and go to a match, great people there. Bob

Get a cheap hat and go.
I recommend that you not buy everything before you try a shoot. Right now you only think you know what you'll like. Take 2 boxes of lead round nose flat point bullets and a box of 12 ga #7 bird shot and just show up. I promise you that someone will let you try their guns. Colt type guns were only some of what they used in the Old West, you might like something else.
Shooters are always turning guns so see what they have for sale. BTW, looks are 99% of the deal.
Also, as the result of CAS and dressing the part I get to do re-enactments, all kinds of Cowboy Festivals and was in a movie last Summer.: )

It's the prairie getup. The FLDS church wears it.

wow, silliest comment to date.... Not sure how many Soiled Doves, Saloon Girls, Cowboys and B-movie cowboys there are in the FLDS, but my guess is none. I can't say as I have ever seen a true Cowboy getup in that group. Not one looks like John Wayne in True Grit.

Does this apply to the Hutterites and the Amish as well? Do they get a pass on wearing "prairie gear"?

I shoot CAS and my gear looks like what a cowboy would wear, nothing else. I don't think ive seen a member of the FLDS wearing a leather gun belt with conchos and a couple holsters, a grey silk kerchief, and boots, but hey... I don't hang out with them either.

So, that reference was a HUGE stretch.
