Ran out of powder before .30 Cal bullets, then a friend gave me a boatload of 180 grain spirepoints and roundnoses--softnose type. And...I have a line on 8lbs of WCC 844. I've done 846 and it worked just fine with 147-gr FMJBTs, but my son is burning through the 5.56 NATO lately and I'd like to use one powder for both mousegun and realgun.

Experiences, anyone? Velocity data with barrel lengths getsya bonus points!

Grump,

Unless you have your heart set on a ball powder, you should seriously consider the IMR4895 pulldown powder that Jeff Bartlett has. This is the same powder that M72 and M118 match ammo was loaded with. Very accurate and will work in the .308 and 5.56mm.

gibrass.com says WC844 can be loaded with H335 data. Hodgdon shows H335 loads in their .308 on their website. I don't have my Hodgdon manual with me at the moment, but I'm sure it would show more.

I still have about 12 lbs. of WC846 left. I bought it sometime ago at $50/8lb. jug. I don't know what I'll do when it's gone ...

UPDATE--I tried it

Worked up some loads, and 45.4 WCC 844 in Federal brass and moly 147-gr bullets got me 2730 fps at 10 feet at 60 degrees F., out of a 22-inch barrel.

Accuracy was, well, like surplus. 3 inches at 100 yards, benched, scope and everything.

ES was also big--100+fps. Oh well, cheap blasting ammo it makes, eh?
