Hello,

I am building what I think is a pretty high quality weapon. My intended purposes for it (with this upper configuration) are to practice riflemanship including Appleseed events (primarily would use my 22LR but would like to use my AR for some courses of fire as well) in order to improve use of the "shooting loop sling", as well as do some medium range (200-300) yard shooting recreationally, though likely not competitively. I will be mounting optics when I can afford good glass, but for right now I only need to finish the build by adding a rear iron sight.

Current configuration:

Aero Precision Upper and Lower receivers
Geissele SSA-E Trigger
Magpul enhanced trigger guard, MOE+ pistol grip, CTR stock
ARP (Ar15Performance.com) 18" SPR 223 WYLDE barrel, 1/8" Twist, complete BCG
Samson Evolution Free-float handguard
JP Enterprise A2 Front Sight w/ Adjustable gas block

I keep talking myself into more and more expensive flip up iron sights. Options seem to range from Magpul BUIS Pro (steel) to GG&G ($170).

How does one decide and what have you liked?

A lot of it is what you like and whether they allow you the clearance you need when mounting a scope/optic. I have used and still have, both Troy Industries and Yankee Hill Machine back up sights. I have been very pleased with both. The one negative I have with the Yankee Hill rear folding sight is it's height when folded. It simply won't fit under some scopes.

Although I like some Magpul products, I have never really cared for any of their back up sight offerings. However some of their newer ones are very flat when folded.

From my own experience, I really like Troy. I had a fixed rear Troy that I used with a red dot but ended up eBaying it away to get something else since I went with a scope this go 'round.

If I would have done it right the first time, I would have gotten a fold down rear Troy and been done with it. Lesson learned.

If you are looking at shooting ranged courses like an Appleseed KD, make sure the sight has repeatable elevation adjustments. If you are just going to shoot it at 25 meters with the 10/22's don't worry about it.

The best bet in this situation is a carry handle or one of the rear sights that incorporate the 6/3 assembly. At least one of the instructors on site should know click values at known ranges for all mil-spec sights from the M1 Garand to the M4. A Matech may get you "close enough" with the right ammo as well.

I had YHM folding on my AR until recently. Swapped from an MOE forend behind a hooded YHM sight/block to a BCM KMR Alpha.

I had to grind the small aperture off my YHM rear to get it to clear my 1-4 Viper PST in an ADM mount.

When i changed to the BCM rail, i got a screamin deal on a set of Troy Micro BUIS with HK-style front and tritium. The Troy has a 135-degree flip aperture in the rear rather than the 90-degree of the YHM. It clears my scope nicely, unmodified. They also sit a little lower than standard AR sights when deployed, though. Not unusably or uncomfortably low, but i do have to tilt my head a little to get on them properly. I suspect they're about right for a lower-1/3 cowitness if used with traditional absolute-level optics.

Thanks guys. I should have realized and mentioned in my OP that I will not buy Troy products for personal political reasons (do not want to derail thread with discussion of this any further, confused people can Google).

Thanks for all the suggestions and please keep them coming!

Midwest Industries has some decent looking offerings in backup sights, but I have no hands on experience with them. I have been pleased with their AR15 and Saiga rifle rails. Also there are the Arms, Inc 40Lsp sights.

Magpuls if you are trying to save $, Troy if you want to spend more on a better product. Either will work.
