Hmm...either my brain is in granny gear today or you brought up more questions in those two posts than I thought were possible given the amount of letters you used.
Aaannnyyyway.
Yes, we AR shooters use extra long bullets for 600 and 1000 yard competition. They are typically 80 grain bullets, but the 90 grain is now getting popular for 1K work. The 80's and 90's are specifically built to be loaded quite long and will not fit into a magazine. A few good shooters use the 75 Grain Hornady (eitehr A-max or HPBT) for 600 yards, loaded at mag length and it works quite well. You are more than welcome at any Highpower match and you may shoot whatever ammo you wish, however you will simply not be competitive with "factory" ammo unless you're using a competition grade of ammo with the heaviest bullets you can get, ie the 75 grainers and SMK's 77's....they're the heaviest commercially loaded ammo on the market. You'll need to reload to use 80's. To get into a competition and use sub-standard ammo will only hurt your marksmanship skills. If you are capable of holding 2 MOA but your ammo won't hold 5 MOA, how do you know how well you are doing when your group is 42" wide at 600 yards? I want ammo that holds tighter than I can.
AR10 is not a Service Rifle
If you are not shooting in Service Rifle class, why use .308 when there is better (like 6X)?
6X doesn't feed as well and gas port setting was a challenge, from what I understand. The main reason it didn't take off is that the size of the AR-10 receiver was too large for good match handling. (The AR-15 is great for it, but when you add a few inches, its too big for gooe position shooting).
There are two main divisions in Highpower Rifle. Service Rifle and Match Rifle. The two classes shoot the same course side by side at the same time. SR must adhere to strict rules regarding appearance, sights, and triggers. MR guns may have just about whatever they want, as long as they're safe. This is what you're talking about.
Please ask if you have more questions.
