I currently have a Colt Post Ban AR-15, with the A2 upper. I would like to add a scope to it, but don't like the height that the A2 adds. I was wondering whether I should, 1. Buy a totally new AR with flattop upper. 2. Buy a new upper and fit it to the lower, or 3. Just buy a flattop receiver and put it on the rifle? Also tell me your reasoning behind your choice. Thanks ahead of time for any advice.

First, buying a new gun is always the answer.

With that said, are you planning on shooting with iron sights at all? If not, then I'd probably just get a new upper receiver. It will be much less money than buying a whole new upper.

IMHO, here is my take on this. Let's start with a financial breakdown of the costs of option 1, 2, 3:

1. A new AR will cost anywhere from 650 to 1000
2. New AR uppers will cost approximately ~$350
3 Buying a flattop receiver will be about $100

Option 1 get you a new rifle, not bad, but you originally set out to scope your current gun, not to get into a new one.

Option 2 A new upper will give you the flexibility to have essentially two rifle choices for half the price of another rifle

Option 3 just takes too darned much work.

I'd go with option 2

Colts are so nice, I would never change anything on one. I'd just buy some scope rings for the a2 upper and see how it really is, and if its really all that bad.

Get the new upper. It also allows you to get rid of all the ridiculous ban features... short of a collapsing stock (i.e., flash surpressor, bayonet lug, etc).

Get the whole new upper. Because, you dont have to do the work involved in re-barreling just an upper, the cost is not as great as the complet rifle, you can switch them in 20 seconds with no tools (if your are slow) and you don't hurt and potential those guns made during the retarted ban may someday have. I know none of us like them now, but those stupid "Ban Rifles" could someday be worth some money on the collector market.
