I want to get a Bushmaster 16" upper for my 20" Colt AR-15. Do I have to get an upper with the bolt, carrier and charging handle or can I use the ones that are in my 20" upper? Simply put: are bolts, carriers, and charging handles interchangable between uppers?

Thanks

Nevermind, after a little research I found the answer: Maybe, but there could be headspace problems.

It is my understanding that they are.

However, I also understand that some of Colt's parts aren't quite "milspec" and might not work with other AR15 manufacturers' uppers, lowers, etc.

Try it, worst case, you have to buy those parts separately.

I've heard that it is possible.

However, the bolt will wear slightly to the barrel that it is in the most.

Second and most important, I think you find it'll become more of a pain. I'd pay the extra 100 bucks and get the extra bolt. That way when you want to swap uppers, 2 pins and your done.

Plus, you'll have a backup if your bolt/carrier/1 upper breaks.

I put a Bushie Dissapator upper on my SP-1 Colt lower. I bought the complete upper. I was told by an Colt armorer that this was the best way to go. It also saves hassle when swaping back and forth.

Post the question on AR-15.com. There's a lot of expertise there.,
