Hello- I just swapped out an A2 upper or an A3 but the finishes do not match- the lower is matte and the upper gloss. I hit it lightly with some 0000 but if possible I would like to match it a little better. It is a fun kick around rifle and am not too concerned about collectibility :rolleyes: Has anyone come up with a way to match aluminum parts (too bad I cant just dunk em in my park tank)

Yep you could use this stuff http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=1117/Product/ALUMA_HYDE_reg__II I've used it before. It works really great, I used it because I couldn't bake the parts I was painting (a shotgun it had a plastic piece holding the mag tube to the receiver and I didn't want it melting). It comes in tons of colors and is really pretty easy to use, just make sure you follow the directions and let it cure for a few days before using your gun. I sand blasted all of my parts first and then rubbed them down with acetone, and the finish turned out really good, but I think you can just rough up the surface a bit with some steel wool or something then rub down with some paint thinner or what not to get all of the oil and dirt off of the surface. One thing to be careful about is the spray nozzle likes to clog up really easily.
You also might try spraying the matte section of your rifle with some spray on polyurethane that matches the gloss level of the glossy part of the gun. You can find that at home depot or where ever.

an Ar's finish isn't very tough. Shoot the tar out of it until it's silver! Then send it off to get refinished in alumihyde.

CCR refinishing deos a good job. House black is probally what your after.
 
Try some CLP on the lower and "shine" it up by oiling it and letting the CLP soak in. The color should darken and slicken up a bit and look closer. AlumHyde II is good stuff, but you will have to totally disassemble the lower and degrease it before coating it. For me it works much better on steel than aluminum.
