Today, I was able to take my rifle to the range. Winter has been in progress and hasn't totally given up.

I get out to the range, see lots of bare ground but some snow in places. Well I get part way to the practice range when my car drops through the snow and ice. A minute or two of careful rocking managed to get me out of my situation and I pulled off the two track and park the car.

I've just driven 36 miles to shoot, I'm going shooting. Grab rifle, mag, ammo, front and rear rest, and some 200 yard reduced for 100 targets and start hiking across the shot gun field and then to the practice range. This snow is hard. You can walk on a lot of it but every once in a while, you punch through. Darn near fell on my face during one punch through. That hole was deep.

Anyway, I get to the benches, I notice that some old paneling from a club house remodeling project has enclosed the back of the shooting point. That is nice. It is cold enough with out a breeze coming up your back.

Darn, a sea of snow between the benches and the 100 yard target boards. I go straight in, punch through a few times, get my target hung and head back.

Looking over the sights for the first time, I notice I bought it with too wide a front post. I like the front post to be as wide as the bullseye. Oh well, I can change that. For a 20" barrel service rifle shooting across the course what is the typical pick for front width size?

Fire 5 shots. Take a walk. Darn, that would have been a nice group for the first 5 shots except for the flier. Hey, dummy you didn't bring the other target with you. I did bring a felt pen. Pull down top of target and color around the holes on back side and head back.

Shoot 5 more shots. Sure wish I had a spotting scope but I didn't think of bringing one and mine is a bit crappy. Anyway, if I had brought it I'm not sure I'd have carried the extra weight out to the range across the snow.

Head up to the target. Total group isn't stellar but I have a feeling it will improve after I learn the rifle and develop a load. I was shooting PMC Bronze 55g FMJ-BT that I bought at the grocery store.

10 shot group 1.2" vertical by 2.4" horizontal.

Second 5 shots of that group 1.2" vertical by 1.3" horizontal. All shooting from a rest.

I was using the largest rear aperture and my eyes are 53 years old with corrective glasses.

I'm thinking I have a rifle that will prove out to be better than me which is what I wanted. Any shortcomings with my performance when I shoot with the club will be mine, not the rifle.

Oh on the way back to my car, I saw someone with a 4x4 try to make the same trip down that road. He got just a bit further and dropped in. He got out slightly faster than I did but instead of parking and hoofing it like me, he turned around and left. :neener:

You would do better with the smallest aperture you can see out of. I got you beat on the age thing by several years and I wear glasses.

I use the .036 aperture on bright sun shiney days. If it's cloudy I use the .042. I have never used the largest aperture.
