Hi All,

I am putting together my first AR (with the help of fellow members) and have a quick question. I have bought a Stag lower and wanted to know if there are any mags I should stay away from. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

The Brownell's and Armalite have worked well for me. USGI too. MagPul's look very promising. No USA or National. Those are junk.

All my mags are Bushmaster (I don't know who makes them). I've used them in both semi-auto and full-auto AR's and never had any problem. I mostly buy 20 rounders as they just look and balance better in a semi-auto. But I've got several 30 rounders to use in the FA guns I get to shoot occasionally.

C Products offers a very good mag.

If you can find used USGI mags and the lips aren't bent to heck, they are a good choice, and I recommend replacing the standard follower with one of the Magpul followers.

The Magpul P-Mags are really outstanding. I've sold them to guys deployed in the sandbox, and the feedback is very positive. Considering what you get, they're really not that expensive, either.

Bushmaster mags are manufactured by D&H Industries, who uses the original LaBelle tooling.

I have owned a couple hundred AR mags. In my experience, to consistently get mags that will work, I will only buy 3rd gen Magpul PMAGs or Okay/NHMTG aluminum mags. These two are the only ones I haven't had to rework/send back/throw in the trash/whatever.

I just bought some english mags that are a real tight fit for my stag lower, i can't even get them to seat properly unless I open the bolt then insert the mag. not sure if they'll be usable at the range.

Sounds like you put too many rounds into them. Take out two and try again.

All MILSPEC magazines are very good IMO.

As has been mentioned already, I would stay away from any and all non MILSPEC magazines such as USA brand, Promag, etc.

Of the MILSPEC magazines I like OKay brand best - but that is just a personal preference on my part.

Good Luck with your AR project. FWIW - MILSPEC magazines are back to where they should be price wise. If you shop around you can get NIW mags for $12-$16 each. Lots of good deals on used mags out there too.

Regards,
Rob

The English mags are usually steel instead of aluminum. I've heard steel mags can damage the aluminum mag well on an AR if they're not inserted carefully. Don't know if it's true.

actually i inserted the mag empty and honestly couldn't get it to stay in there unless i pulled the bolt back first. i hit the bolt stop and it advanced completely. hit the mag eject button and looked at the underside of bolt and it looked like there was some friction. the feed lips are different on the english mags than they are on my NH 20-rounder. i didn't think it would be an issue with STANAG regs and the american special relationship with the UK. I planned on refinishing these and putting magpul followers in them but the whole project is questionable now.
