I need a new AR upper. Well, I don't NEED it, but I want it. This upper will be used for hunting deer and wee little piggies inside of 300 yards. It is not intended to be a CQB carbine - it's a field tool. I currently have a scoped 7.62x39 16" flattop AR that works well as a brush gun but it starts to run out of steam past 200 yards. I also have a 20" AR10 scoped flattop that is plenty stomping past 300 yards, but which is a bit heavy for all-day carry.

So - do I put together a 20" 6.8SPC upper for the AR15, or put together a lightweight (say, 16") upper for the AR10. The 6.8SPC will be a bit cheaper, but the costs are comparable enough not to use it as a defining decision criteria.

Thoughts?

Yes - have dies and lots of supplies for 308 and 7.62x39; adding 6.8SPC to the lineup would be a relatively trivial thing.

6.5 grendel is also an option. plenty of oomph behind those nice pointy bullets.

I'd go with the 6.8mm simply because it's what I'd like to build down the road. Hey, you wanted an opinion! You gotta figure, if the 6.8 fizzles out, parts will slowly diminish as well. Buy it now, it makes especially good sense for a fellow reloader. The .308s aren't going anywhere for a long time to come. I guess the 6.8, IMO, will go the way of the 10mm, still around for those who obsess over it, but not too common.

I'm curious why the AR10 .308 upper is an option unless you are also willing to buy a new lower to take the larger magazines.

I already have an AR10; a 20" version.
