I just picked up my first AR a while back. I went with a Bushmaster Superlight and couldn't be happier.
You'll inevitably get the responses that say to build rather than buy. You may want to do that, but I didn't want to get into that for my first AR. To save some money I bought a complete lower, and and a complete upper separate and snapped them together. All told it was right about $800 for a flat top w/a detachable carry handle.
I like the idea of a 20 inch bbl, with detachable handle, but if that is too much bucks, just get a flattop. Also it would be very cool if they make one with a pencil bbl, not the heavy bbl.
I have a Bushmaster. I've only got to shoot it a couple times and it shoots way off to the left, so that I have to dial the sight all the way out and it's still slightly off at 25 yards. I mean to send it back to Bushmaster when I get around to it. I've read about over tightened barrels causing this problem. It has soured me a little on Bushmaster. I'd still like to get a Dissipator though.
I think my next AR would be a Rock River Arms mid-length carbine.
