Okay, if you don't remember, or didn't read my earlier posts, I got my old my old recurve out to play with about 6 months ago, Innocent practice, I've had the bow for 35 years, but hadn't touched it in about 20. I'd figured out a way to maybe shoot it better, no sights. Well, it snapped, so I was into it by then, ebayed a Hoyt compound off the net. Later, in one of these discussions, one of you guys made me spend 120 bucks on a new PSE recurve. LOL! But, so, anyway, I have had the compound re-strung recently. I was out practicing today and decided to make my target smaller. Actually, I'd started off being happy to hit a paper plate at 25 yards. that's gotten boring. Now, I'd wondered if I could even USE sights on a compound, never wanted to spend a bunch on one to find out, but that Hoyt was a whole 70 bucks shipping and all, so I took the chance. I am right handed, left eye dominant and my right eye is about 20-70 or a little less corrected. It's bad, IOW. I shoot long guns left handed, but bows? Nope, gotta go with the right arm.

Anyway, I've been shrinking the size of the target to the point that today, I was shooting at a cat food can about 3" in diameter at 25 yards and hitting it or right at it nearly every shot! BUT, the ones I missed is when my eye was blurring. I think I've found the limits of my eyesight with the thing. I'm probably not competition material, but might be if I could see worth a crap. I have to strain to see the pin and the target. I'm thinking painting it red would make it stand out a little better, might try that. When I miss it, though, it's only by an inch or two. I've really got the mechanics of shooting down, it's just a matter of seeing the target at this point.

Anyway, I think I'm ready for bow season. For 3 months, I've practiced nearly every day with that compound and my new recurve (has sights) in preparation. I've got the follow through now and the stance and consistency of the draw and all that. At 25 yards, I can stand a 32 ounce Styrofoam drink cup on it's head and hit it nearly every shot. I can hit it 1 out of five from 35 yards and the other 4 ain't too far off, inside a deer's kill zone at least. 40 just takes a tad more elevation, same success rate as 35. I haven't tried 50, think 40 is far enough.

So, I haven't practiced with the recurve much at extended ranges. It works to 35 yards pretty well, but the sights are a little different than the compound and as I'm going to hunt with the compound, all 30 yard and farther practice is with the compound so that I'm quicker with the sight pins. I wanna KNOW that bow, not have to think, when the deer or hog walks in range.

But, anyway, every time I think I can't get any better, I figure something out that helps. My latest shooting was inspired by Mel Gibson, "The Patriot". "Aim small, shoot small." :D I do thinkin' I'm running into the limits of 20/70 vision acuity at this point, though. I knew at some point I would. At least I can hit a deer's vitals, can see well enough for that and that's what I never knew if I could do in the past.

Over the last few days have been shooting a lot more arrows than normal. A couple of things that I notice after shooting a few arrows is I start to concentrate more on my target and less on my sight. At that point my groups get a little bigger. Also once a little bit of fatigue sets in and see your sight just doing circles around your target, even if they are small, its best to take a break. After 10 minutes an hour whatever the break legnth is you will see your groups get back to where they were. I also notice that if I want to be a great shot at 30 than I practice at 40. At one point last year I could get a 5 shot group 2"-2.5" at 40 and about 3"-4" at 50. Course that was last year but working back up to that. Did you apply for Choke canyon archery?

I've had to put my archery practice on hold. I had an arrow punch through the soft spot in the target board, slide through the nitch in the straw bales, punch a neat hole in the board fence, and land ten yards into my neighbor's yard.

Gotta find a safer place to shoot.

By the way, I have similar eye problems. I just shoot left-handed. I have left-hand and right-hand compounds. I also have a basic longbow that can be shot either way.

I'm ambihelical. I screw up with either hand.

LOL, well, I'm going to sink or swim with the right eye. I don't think a deer will be as tough to see as that little cat food tin. Fortunately, all I have behind my fence is a bunch of trees and brush and then about 10 acres of corn the ol' boy just cut.

I got the books in for the public hunts and haven't even looked at 'em. I've got my place set up. I reckon I'll try that, short drive, not tough on me to do. I've got to go try to tie down my feeder Tuesday and get it going again. Damned hogs won't leave it alone. I'll stick a hog if I get a chance. Rather eat hog than deer, anyway.

I've vastly improved my stamina with the compound by shooting my new 50 lb recurve a lot. That thing is a FULL 50 lbs at full draw. I start drawing those circles after a couple dozen arrows with that thing. After shooting it, standing at full draw with the compound seems positively child's play, LOL! The release is a lot smoother with the compound, too, due to less tension. I'd hate to have to shoot one of those 100 lb English longbows. My GAWD, 50 is tough enough, LOL!

I shoot both bows at least 5 days a week and usually multiple sessions during the day. Yeah, I get to drawing those circles about the time the sweat starts messing up my eyes. All you have to do in 100 degree heat and 70 percent humidity is just stand outside and that's a problem. I HATE AUGUST! July, even June weren't too great this year. I'm ready for the fronts. BRING ON THE FRONTS!

I love archery. Have shot since I was four and will be forty this december but am afraid I am gonna have to hang it up. Last year I had a custom longbow made after doing the longbow, recurve, compound, recurve back to longbow bit............. now a torn rotator cuff and cannot afford surgery right now. Plus talking to some guys that have had it fixed could not shoot their bows even after surgery and they shoot compounds................ sure am gonna miss it :(
