So far back in the WV hills that they have to pipe
just days after reciveng a butcherd westinghouse nagant. I went up to see an old guitar buddy of mine and noticed an old dusty barrel sticking out of corner behind an old fender duo-tone. So I grabbed it out of the corner to find it was a bubba-ized aregentinian (sp?) mauser.

there is an AG in a sheild on the barrel behind the rear sight. and there is whats left of maybe a cast mark just part of a wreath or an olive branch or something. the reciver says

mauser modelo argentino 1891
manufactura loewe berlin on the side of the reciver opposite the eject side.

all numbers match and the bore looks good.

it is a tasteful chop job, if one exists. somone put some time into it. the stalk is a beautiful deep red color and still has the hand guard on top of the barrel and enough stalk for the barrel band.

he said he thought the caliber was 7.65 x 53 and that you could make it from 30-06 brass or so he said he is not a handloader. he said he hadnt shot it in two years.

but for 75 dollars worth of old gibson parts, I couldnt pass it up.

If I keep getting these old war horse rifles im going to open a home...
"Justin's home for neglected and mutilated service rifles, all are welcome"

is ammo out there? can you make it from 30-06 brass? did I get hosed?

I did some testing with the '91 a few years back and found that they do far better with large, slow bullets than with the spitzer ball you often find for sale. The spitzer ball was made for the later Argie Mausers on the '98 pattern. With custom 313" 220 grain rn's at moderate velocity and low pressure, I was able to get nearly MOA groups. Watch your pressure, though. The '91 action isn't as strong as the '98 and you may get gas blowback through the bolt as well. Also I found primers worked best if set in a few thousands of an inch. When flush I had some CCI primers busted because the firing pin is set up to deal with indented military berdan primers.

The best bullets commercially available would prob. be Woodleigh's 220 grain RN 312" for the .303. I got good groups with these as well. I don't know of any 313" bullets in the right size which would be available.

Sweet shooting rifle once you get it set up.

Also, I found that Arisaka Type 99 tangent sights fit almost perfectly into the rear tangent slot of the Argie '91. You can do a sight swap and the Arisaka peep hole will zero at about 200 meters.
