I recently picked up an Arisaka type 38, and I have been familiarizing myself with its individual components. After disassembling and reassembling the bolt as per the procedure outlined in the Arms and Militaria Press handbook, I have noticed that the safety does not fully engage. When I turn the safety knob, I cannot pull the trigger or release the striker, but I can lift the bolt handle just shy of the point where it would open under spring pressure as is common on cock on close actions. Prior to disassembly, the safety firmly locked the bolt. Has anyone encountered this problem before? It is concerning to me as I do not want to take this rifle to the range unless all mechanisms are functioning correctly. As it is now, there is an increased risk of failure that is unacceptable to me, and I want to fix it.
