Hello High Roaders..... I have a question for those of you with more knowledge than me. I am considering an Armalite AR-10 or the DPMS version of the same. I have heard there are quirks with the magazines, in that one will work in the other, but not vice versa. Can anyone answer this for me? Thanks.

Armalite offers 2 variants, one for their proprietary mags (up to 25 round), one that uses DPMS/Magpul pattern. Noveske .308 AR's also use the Armalite pattern.

DPMS only offers their pattern. 20 round max, AFAIK.

As an aside, though the Gen II Armalite mags are much better than the Gen I, the Gen I is nothing more than an M14 mag with a cutout and a different follower. M-14 mags will work in an Armalite with their stock follower, but will not lock the bolt back on empty.

DPMS uses the KAC SR-25 spec'd magazine.

KAC makes metal 10 round and 20 round magazines.

The Magpul PMAG-LR and PMAG-LR/SR were designed for the KAC SR-25/M-110.
PMAG-LR is available as a 20 round magazine and is being discontinued (replaced by the PMAG-LR/SR).
PMAG-LR/SR is suppose to be available this year as a 10 round, 20 round and 25 round magazines.

The 1994 version of the ArmaLite AR-10 was released with a modified M14 magazine. Why? To meet the assault weapons ban requirements.

The DPMS with it's SR-25 mag was released after the AWB ended.

The first version of the ArmaLite mags were actual modified M14 mags, they later produced the "Gen II" mags". You can find these in 5,10, 15, 20 and 25 round versions. 20's being the most popular because they clear the bench, or ground when shooting prone.

A little over a year ago ArmaLite released a new version of it's AR-10. Designated the AR-10A, it uses the SR-25 (Pmag) magazine. ArmaLite continues to build the AR-10B with the M14 mag.

The M14 is a proven magazine that is about as bullet proof as it gets. Exception: cheap import copies of the M14 mags.

Some unscrupulous sellers would use the AR-10 mag kit to mod cheap import mags, these were not always (never) successful.

A modified USGI M14 mag is bullet proof. I have twenty year old Gen I's that are like new in function.
