Sorta thinking out loud: With some of these "new" powders, or with any previously unused powder, I'd think you should compare whatever loading data is available to other data for other powders to try and find a comparable burn rate. Say for 748, the only data you have is a max load for a 150-grain bullet. Okay, compare the weight of the charge with that of other powders' max charges. This sorta gets you in the ball park.

Once in that ball park, you can use a comparable powder's starting load if you go to a heavier bullet. And as usual, proceed cautiously...

Plus, I'd go to hunting for magazine articles and other website comments, besides whatever us "experts" "know", here. :D

why go to all the trouble just to try something different when you can just use proven powders and loads.
there is plenty of surplus 4895 in this town in 8# bottles for a good price so why waste your time on 748 as I do not know anyone who shots 748?

Wow. Thats one of those, 'Doi, why didn't I think of that?"things. Great idea and rule of thumb. (I know, no absolutes. Ballpark only.)

Thanks.

Yeah, thats what I'm going to do. I'm just going to sit on the heavy bullets and stick to the established stuff at least until I can shoot better. Lots of experimentation to be done within the confines of proven loads.

I guess the data kind of proved I would be ok with the heavy bullets with that powder at least, so gave rise to the idea to get some. On second thought though, maybe I should walk awhile longer before starting to try and run with it.:p

All great advice, you guys are top notch.:)

FYI, 748 is WW748, still current manufacture by Olin, and could be considered the reloader's commercial and consistent grade closest to WC846 surplus powder.

It lights fine for me using standard primers.

Try not to compare 22- or 24- inch barrel velocities with those the 1,000-yard boltgunners get from 26- and 30-inch barrels. It's hard for me to tell whether some other reported velocities with other powders are not so "soft" because the powders work better with 190s, or because the users have hot-rodded their loads into blue pills.
