There will be a wealth of material out there before today is out.

For those who need to organize their thoughts, let us begin with this, from our own LawDog:
Virginia Tech Shooting

Oh, Christ, here we go again.

Some maladjusted little bugsnipe gets his mental panties into a bunch and goes flat boiling nutters with a gun in one of the few places where he knows someone isn't going to put him down like a rabid dog during his first magazine.

And -- as usual -- the Mainstream Media is bleating about needing more Gun Control.

Gun Control is a failure. You simply can not expect those who would do murder -- those who would violate the highest law -- you can not expect them to obey a lesser law.

And you can not turn a failure into a success by doubling the failure.

. . . more . . .
Perhaps others have links to lucid, cogent commentary on this event that will aid us in enlightening others who find themselves adrift in this?

"Gun Free" Zone Failure in Virginia

Here Come The Gun Banners

April 16, 2007, just might be a turning point in the battle to restore gun rights to Americans. The tragedy at Virginia Tech today, with more than 30 people being killed in a premeditated murder spree, will be the fulcrum upon which the anti-gun rights forces leverage their efforts to restrict (destroy, if possible) your right to not only own guns, but to protect yourself and your family.

Quite simply, this is the mass shooting the anti-self defense forces have been waiting for, as we will see over the coming days and weeks. The papers are already drawn up; the proposed restrictions were penned long ago; they have merely been waiting for this moment.

i don't currently maintain a blog, but here's my two cents anyway:

it's sad that this tragedy happened. however, it's not the first time and it's not the last time.

as usual, all the talking heads will come out of their rat holes, put their own spin on it and use it to further their own cause.

the pro-gun crowd will use it to emphasize how people were killed because they were defenseless. one armed person could've ended it before it really started.

the anti-gun crowd will use it to lament about how horrible guns are and how we need more laws. of course they'll fail to mention the fact that complying with laws is usually not at the top of suicidal maniac's priority lists, that the guy could've also gone on a killing spree with an ax, chainsaw, or butchers knife, or mowed down people with a car.

the media will pounce on all the gory details so they can make more money off the misery of others by selling headlines and having their readers in shock and awe, while conveniently omitting half the fact, and distorting the other half with inaccuracies and idiocy.

lastly, nobody will bother to mention that the real cause for this tragedy is the decision the shooter made, and nothing else - personal responsibility.

and of course, in the next few weeks and months we will hear about what a quiet but nice boy he was, how well he did in school, and nobody would ever imagine him doing something this horrible. then there will be the vast amount of lawsuits against

- the school by parents: "you failed to protect my poor child, you horrible school, you!"
- the gun manufacturer: "your evil product killed my poor child, how could you!"
- the video game manufacturer of the games he was playing right before his shooting spree: "you turned this guy into an efficient killing machine with your half-lifes game!"
- the police: "it's your duty to protect us, why were you not there and shot that guy?"

and god knows who else.

yeap, just another day in the world...

you think i'm cynical? maybe so. i'd prefer the term realistic.
