All,
I recently picked up an older Remington Model 12 as a "gunsmith special". Its bolt is missing the firing pin (flat-type),firing pin spring and plunger, firing pin pins and extractor parts. My questions are limited to the correct installation of the firing pin.
I've taken some photos which depict the way I think it should be installed. The firing pin came from Numrich. Paperwork with the order noted it is a stronger unit, and the firing pin pin nearest the breech is not needed. This leaves me with a few questions:
1) Does the plunger bear its force (to return the firing pin): a) against the firing pin pin; or, b) against the end of the slot in the firing pin? I think a). If this is correct, these (click to zoom) photos would depict the installation I'd expect:

Photo 7102 - Firing pin hanging partly out of the bolt slot, showing correct ready-to-fire horizontal alignment and firing pin pin to be installed (note: the breech-end pin cannot be installed; it is obstructed by the firing pin itself).
Photo 7103 - Shows firing pin spring and plunger installed in firing pin slot, which one would not see when installed in the bolt. Plunger is bearing against firing pin pin.
Is this correct?
If so, next question:
How in the world does one compress the firing pin spring and plunger while installing the firing pin pin ...
Thanks so much,
Chris
