Astonishing Article in Austin Paper

I opened today's Austin American-Statesman newspaper, and at the top of the Sports section is the beginning of an article by Mike Leggett, a staff writer at the paper . . . "Africa has changed, but it remains the land of hunters' wildest dreams"

Inside the paper, he has a full page devoted to his pending hunt for plains game in South Africa, books to consider reading, references to Safari Press, brief discussion of costs, how he went about arranging a hunt, etc.

He plans to hunt the northern Transvaal for kudu, oryx, zebra, impala, eland, warthog, wildebeest, etc., and will visit Kruger to photograph elephant, Cape buff, lion, and (hopefully) leopard.

Wow - hunting in a liberal rag like the Statesman . . . well, this IS Texas, after all.

That's the thing... Austin may very well be the most liberal city in Texas but it still is in Texas.

Aw, the unAmerican Statesman has always been schizoidal. The sports section has almost always had a lot of normal people in it, with a fairly good outdooors section.

The sports section folks have never had much use for car racing, though. Back when we had sports car races downtown around the auditorium/coliseum, there would be very little coverage, most years. And they wouldn't give no-cost-to-them press credentials for reporting from the old TWS races at Bryan.

I think it was a Texas Parks and Wildife magazine a few years back that did an article discussing the number of songbirds killed by cats. The soccermommies responded (that their Fluffy could not possibly be such a killer) in such numbers that the editors - several months later - finally published a notice that they would no longer be printing them on the topic, to STOP sending them.

Has anyone seen the new "deer hunter" video game? It has the deer doing the hunting. It is a blast - some of the "calls" available are "free beer ! free beer !" and another is a sultry female voice, "Help! I am naked and I have a pizza ! !"

the animals to be hunted and taken with firearms are all 'grass eaters' so to speak and many folk in the animal lover bunch class those as 'less desireable' when the herds are large - they know that some must be taken by man or a meat-eater one.
one of my 5 sisters is an animal rights advocate, some of what they say makes sense IMO - it's the factory farms and slaughter houses they screech about and at best that's a dirty bizzness.

I've found that many anti-hunters turn pro- deer hunting after a deer takes the front off their Corvette.

Channel 13, KTRK in Houston, used to have a nightly outdoor report, guy named Thom Dickerson. He'd be duck hunting out of Katy or deer hunting somewhere and in the summer he'd give fishing reports and such. It was way cool. They finally took him off, though. Always figured the PETA crowd got him fired, but I don't know that for sure.

I'm not anti-hunting at all, just haven't been previously interested in deer. However, I recently became part of the crowd who has had vehicular conjugations with deer (except in my case it was a motorcycle). I'll be getting the smokepole sighted in come next season, ready to thin the forest rat herd.

They should have used the statistics from Australia on the decline of native bird species due to felines.
