The SP101 was my first revolver too, at age 35. Despite what some will say about snubbies being just for bad breath distances, I’ve made a lot more progress in my handgun skills with this than with the 1911 that preceded it because (1) I love shooting it, and (2) the grip fits my (small) hand much better than any full-size service pistol could. And I love the simplicity of the manual of arms and cleaning.

And have I mentioned that it’s cool?

My finest .357 Magnum revolver is an old Model 27 with 5" barrel a-la Skeeter Skelton, that has been in my stable since 1980. It is long out of print, and harkened back to the days when S&W packaged their goods in wooden boxes along with a cleaning rod, brush and screwdriver.

As far as the current group, my best modern .357 is a Ruger GP100 Match Champion. This is NOT a standard production GP100. It is factory tuned to go head-to-head with the S&W Performance Center 686 SSR and at a lower price point. They succeeded.

This is my GP100 Match Champion. I carry this as my spring /summer ridge walking gun. It has a 4.2" barrel, the bottom lug is milled off just past the extractor rod and the barrel sides are milled flat to shed weight. The rear sight is a Novak fixed rough country model, regulated to put 158 grain Magnum loads to point of aim. The trigger and hammer are shimmed and centered in the frame and the action slicked up. This is an easy revolver to shoot. Also makes you want to.

Sweet looking gun and rig! Very nice for ridge walking (use to carry a Security Six for just the same purpose).
