Anyone out there that has a couse deer tag for 34A this year, I have some useful info for ya.
I was out there this last weekend glassing javelina for a friend. I started off Saturday morning in the west portion of the unit glassing the the hills and picked up two really good one's, and one decent little shooter.
Within the first 30 minutes I picked up 2 really nice bucks. Counting brows, the first one was a 5x5, with brows over 6", one was split, making the base really big on that side. Spread was a good 16", and he had 2 club drops, big drops. He stood perfectly still on the hill side posing for like 30 minutes, just showing off I guess, ha, ha. Seriously though, it was weird that he just stood there for so long, and didn't even take a step or move his head. I picked him up the next day too, right on the same hill. In my defense, he was a couple miles away, and I'm not real good at field scoring, but this guy was most definitely some where between, and no less than 115", and very likely in the 120" class.
The other one wasn't as big, but he was still a 100"+ deer. 4x4 not counting the G1's, nothing extra on him, but he had close to 6" brows, and the rest was real symmetrical, probably about 14" - 15"spread. This guy was walking though, and also very far off, maybe 2 miles, so I didn't get a whole lot of quality time looking at him.
It was really warm out, so as soon as the sun was on them they bedded down. I picked up one more shortly afterward, but he was a little guy, not much mass, but he had some good potential for next year.
Then I moved over to the east side of the unit and picked up another good one, another 100" or so deer. He was moving pretty fast though, not because of me, I was probably 1500 yds. from him. And as I watched him I noticed two coyotes that were responsible for pushing him, kind of cool. Saw a few others too, nothing any good, just forks and little guys.
I don't have a 34A tag this year, which is why I'm sharing this with anyone who does. I'm gonna be in 36B this year. Good due to the large number of big boys in there, but it's bad because that unit is brutal, rugged country, they don't come easy in 36B.
Hope this helps someone.
