Attorney General John Ashcroft Reverses Bush Administration Position on Renewing Federal Ban on Assault Weapons
Wednesday March 5, 1:17 pm ET
Ban Will End in September 2004 Without Congressional Action

WASHINGTON, March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Attorney General John Ashcroft, in testimony before Congress yesterday, for the first time refused to offer support for re-authorizing the federal ban on assault weapons. Ashcroft's comments before the Senate Judiciary Committee represent an apparent reversal of Bush Administration policy as well as Ashcroft's prior statements before the committee.

During his January 2001 confirmation hearing, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) asked Ashcroft if he would support re-authorizing the law when it sunsets in September 2004. Ashcroft's answer was unequivocal, "It is my understanding that the president-elect of the United States has indicated his clear support for extending the assault weapon ban, and I would be pleased to move forward that position, and to support that as a policy of this president, and as a policy of the Justice Department."

There was no such clarity yesterday, as detailed in news reports, when Ashcroft failed to renew his prior commitment on the part of the Administration. The Attorney General, under repeated questioning, for the first time refused to state that the Administration would support renewing the law. Yet just last week the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the White House supported extending the ban. Ashcroft's refusal to voice support for renewal of the ban represents a dramatic shift in the Administration's position.

VPC Public Policy Director Joe Sudbay states, "Attorney General John Ashcroft and the Bush Administration have, once again, placed the deadly agenda of the National Rifle Association and the gun industry over the safety of the American public and law enforcement. Terrorist training manuals seized in Afghanistan have made clear that America's enemies recognize the nexus between our nation's weak gun laws and potential terrorist attacks. That the Attorney General would reveal this change in policy at a Congressional hearing on homeland security only illustrates the depth of the Bush Administration's fealty to the NRA." The NRA has made termination of the ban a priority. During his failed 2000 Senate campaign, Ashcroft was the beneficiary of more than $500,000 in NRA spending.

Lets see.

2004.

Elections.

Need voter support.

Close one last time.

Some of these guys who like guns might not vote for Bush if he states the AWB is gonna be renewed.

These guys have good memory.

Remember the 94 and 02 elections.

Hmmmmm.

Time will tell.

So called AW's could be viewed as "anti-terrorist homeland defense rifles".

Wouldn't do to act like a Democrat now George, would it?

Don't hold your breath kids.

Politics.... ya gotta love it.

Adios

Note the source- the spin may be VPC, hopefully the intentions of the AG and Bush admin are presented accurately.:)

2 dogs,

In your one sentence I read..."VPC... intentions... presented accurately..."???

I needed a good laugh. Thank you.

We ALL KNOW Their intentions.

And politicians, being politicians... I would be dollars to donuts that someone is weighing "Soccer Moms in the East" votes to "Gun owners across the nation" votes and figuring out the correct solution for the present Administration.

VPC... intentions... presented accurately... Now thats funny sir.

Thanks for the heads up in the original post as well tho'. I've come to look forward to your daily inclusions. Saves me from going to KABA, Geeks w/ Guns, FirearmNews et al.

Adios

I don't think it was unequivocal. That answer left plenty wiggle room, just as any good politician would do. That was then. He just understands things differently now, and I would be pleased if he would be pleased to move in that direction. :)

Hey, don't skip- you might still miss something.:D

You can never believe anything from the mouth of a government employee, elected or appointed, they are all professional equivocators.

That being said, the administration has stated repeatedly that it "supports the law as it is written".

As it is written the law sunsets. It requires a study to verify its effectiveness prior to renewal.

Ashcroft scares me as much as Reno did.

Who knows what to believe? Just going on past trends the government is more likely to continue/increase regulation at the expense of your freedom than it is to respect your God given rights.

Oh it's a gun article, so the reporter always has to get a quote in there from the VPC idiot. You'd think it was required by law or something.

The telephone number of the DOJ comment line is here:
202-353-1555

Please be sure to drop them a line telling 'em how much you appreciate having a guy who's actually read the Constitution calling the shots now.

It's just an answering machine, so don't worry about getting stage fright. ;) If even that's too spooky, here's the email:

Not quite . . . this isn't even a news piece. Its a VPC press release that's presented by Yahoo to look like an actual news story.

WAHHHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Write YOUR congressman and reps and let 'em all know how we feel. We must be aggressive this time around. No more "well, lets just be quiet and hope it expires without anybody noticing"- GET THE WORD OUT! Explain our position over and over again even if it feels like we are banging our heads against the wall. Since we appear to have momentum lets drive our point home. Kill them with truth, bury them with facts and DONT GIVE UP! I know everybody is tired of hearing this but we must not give an inch. Keep the faith. We can turn this around. I think everybody is so worried about us losing again we are afraid to speak up. We have got to be LOUDER then them, more ruthless and treacherous if need be. We are fighting for our very way of life. If we cannot stop this pendulum now we may not ever be able to stop it. Talk to your neighbors, your coworkers, you parents, your freinds, relatives, anybody with ears is a target for our evangelism. LETS ROLL!

HEADLINE: U.S. MAY END 1994 ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN;
Ashcroft refuses to rule out shift

BYLINE: Eunice Moscoso Washington Bureau

BODY:
WASHINGTON - Attorney General John Ashcroft refused Tuesday to say whether the Bush administration would support extending a ban on semi-automatic weapons that expires next year, even though the president has said he favors the move.

Pressed by senators at a hearing, Ashcroft would not directly answer the question, but cited a two-year government study that concluded the law's impact on gun violence has been uncertain.

"We will continue to study what impact the ban has had on reducing crime," he told the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The 1994 assault weapons ban, which prohibits 19 types of firearms, is hailed by gun-control groups as landmark legislation that needs to be strengthened, not diluted or allowed to expire.

A tougher law is needed because gun manufacturers have found ways to get around the ban by modifying their guns, said Joe Sudbay, political director of the Violence Policy Center, a gun control group in Washington.

Sudbay said Ashcroft's comments "sounded like a big reversal" and may indicate the White House is caving into the demands of the National Rifle Association, a large GOP contributor.

He also said the banned weapons are often used by criminals and drug dealers and a terrorist manual found in Afghanistan instructs recruits to buy AK-47 rifles in countries such as the U.S.

The NRA said the ban on semi-automatic weapons, to expire in September 2004, has not reduced crime, as evidenced in a Justice Department study during the Clinton administration.

"The results of this ban have been, at best, unconvincing," said Chris W. Cox, the chief NRA lobbyist. "Why should we keep ineffective laws on the books?"

Cox said that laws should focus on criminals, not on law-abiding citizens who use guns for self-defense or recreation.

Nice to see that. I can state that I will NOT vote for Dubya if he does sign a new AW ban. Sure hope he takes to heart what happened to his dear old dad after selling out the gun owners.
