Guns amnesty won't affect criminals
September 21, 2003

The NSW government will press ahead with its illegal handguns amnesty despite admitting it is unlikely to take firearms from the hands of criminals.

Police Minister John Watkins officially launched the "no questions asked" campaign that will allow people with illegal firearms to hand them to police with impunity from October to March next year.

It coincides with the six month national gun buyback scheme for recently outlawed types of handguns.

Police have backed the amnesty but Police Association president Ian Ball said it was obvious criminals were not going to be handing their weapons over.

"Let's be honest here," he said.

"Honest people who have had guns in their possession when they probably shouldn't have are going to be the ones handing them back.

"Criminals are not going to hand them back."

Nonetheless, he said, the association was very supportive of the move.

"Anything that gets guns off the street is a good thing," Mr Ball said.

But opposition police spokesman Peter Debnam said the buyback and amnesty would do little to reduce the number of handguns in the possession of criminals.

"Criminals and thugs are simply not going to hand them in," he said.

"They will be laughing all the way to their next bank robbery."

He advocated tougher sentences and more resources for traditional policing.

Mr Watkins also acknowledged that criminals were unlikely to have a moral turnaround and hand their weapons over.

"The gun amnesty is not targeting criminals ... People will hold firearms for a number of reasons," he said.

Somenoe please clone Peter Debnam because that's the first piece of common sence I have heard come out of the mouth of anyone in the Australian Gov. Tougher Sentences and resources to find violent criminals these are the things that reduce crime, fine them and them lock'em up and throw away the key. Then again gun banners aren't interested in reducing crime.

You mean, "when we have passed a law against them," rather.

.45R, I don't disagree with what you say, but I believe it must go further. Let's clone Mr. Debnam, but I won't feel good about their situation until an Australian official admits that it's armed citizens that reduce crime.

I might have to wait a long time.

Before we laud Pete Debnam.....

I should mention that he is a member of the Prime Minister's party, the Liberal Party, and no doubt is trying to discredit the majority party in NSW, the Labour Party, rather than express any deeply-held sentiments:(

It is easy to become cynical with Australian politics when guns are involved- both major parties and the two leading minor parties passionately hate firearms and fear their owners:scrutiny:

Police Minister Watkins is a typical tyrant with a tyrant's views:barf:

Happy Bob:

You'll have to wait at least as long as it will take for Chuck Schumer to praise RKBA:what:

The only way a criminal will hand over a firearm at a "no questions asked" turn in will be to get rid of evidence of a crime.

I am so sick of hearing about all these "guns on the street." I have been walking around all this time trying to find some to take back home with me and I'll be damned if I can find any at all. I found a quarter once though. Where are all these "guns on the street?"

Yeah, it's hard to drive when you have to dodge all those guns lying (see, I used the right verb) in the street.

Especially those assault weapons "flooding the streets" - sometimes I have to use 4 wheel low just to drive over them.

Tomorrow we have a 40% chance of "blowing and drifting guns"
