If you decided the 10-10 wasn't necessary I highly suggest the RCBS 5-0-5 over the Dillon scale.
Please explain. I was just ready to get the Dillon, why the 505 instead? Not doubting, just want to know if it is something other than personal preference?

If the Dillon is in fact the same as the RCBS then there is no reason not to buy the Dillon. I knew there were several different companies who sell Ohaus products, I just forgot which ones.

Sorry for the confusion. Hey, I'm getting old!

Both the Dillon and the RCBS 505 are made by Ohaus - They are the same scale with a slightly different shaped and colour body. They are both 3 poise beams with floating agate bearings, the beams are interchangeable.

Unfortunately they are now both made in either China or Mexico and quality is not what it once was.

If I was looking for a new scale now - I would search out an old RCBS 5-10, although not been made for the last 15 years or so they were one of the best scale made. (Other scales I like are early 10/10's, Hornady "M" type, Lyman M5's and the large RCBS 304)

No problem, so amI! After going crosseyed looking at all the scales, I thought I had decided, but better learn what you knew. Sounds like either would be fine.

Does this qualify as “Way-Back”? Early 1960s if memory serves. Price on the box is $16.50. :D

That's a perfect example - although the changes are gradual and subtle the corners get chopped all the time.

The scale shown is the same one marketed by RCBS as the 502 (both made by Ohaus). Lyman dropped this and went to the orange D-7. This no longer had the floating agate bearing but fixed and smaller/cheaper knife edges.

RCBS continues to sell the 502 (now made in Mexico) but take a look at the picture here.
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/605320/rcbs-model-502-magnetic-powder-scale-505-grain-capacity

It no longer has a nice knurled steel level adjuster, just a cheap plastic moulding on an aluminium shaft. It no longer has the 10th grain indicator lines on the register plate.

These are just the obvious things, the things like knife edges out of square and machine burrs on the beam serrations don't show up but they're there just the same.

The Redding No 2 is a good straight forward scale but even that is not what it was just a few years ago, although they look exactly the same at first glance.

Until a couple of years ago the scale was engraved on the beam, now it's a bit of tape stuck to the beam.

Old Redding No 2:

New Redding No 2:

Notice how the 10th marking on the right go right to the notch on the old scale, on the new scale they're just stuck on somewhere about right.

These modifications aren't to make it a better scale - just to make more profit and hope we will except it or not even notice.

My favorite set of scales : Webster W2 model , they only go to 350gr. but these will show .1 gr if left uncovered for 2 days , it was the dust that settled in the pan !!

The knives are set up a little different also , they`re sharp & set in a )( instead of a V in the base , the oil is synthetic PS fluid it won`t migrate out of the bottle & dampens motion much smoother than any magnetic set up !!

From a local GunShow $24.

I also found a couple sets of Lyman M5 scales , 1 set someone took all the ZERO weights out of the pan holder ,but remedy was easy enuff ! $90 in both !

There`s scales to have as used ya just gotta look.
All scales are check with a set of "check weights" before pressed into service.

The Webster is an excellent scale - These old oil damped scales work really well, I have a Pacific and a couple of Redding No 1's as well as a Webster with it's original box and oil jar.

anothernewb, not sure about the age but hope you didn't bid on that item as it's missing the hanging weight. ;)

If you did, I am sure you could get one from RCBS.

It does say "Manufactured by Ohaus".

wow. this has sparked a significant discussion I had not thought about. here's the one I purchased - those that are in the know, is this likely an older model, or a fairly new one???

Yes that ones made in US. Looks like late 90's by the colour. All the ones made in China/Mexico are a speckled green hammer finish.

A good clean and you have an excellent scale.
