I just got back from the long awaited prarie dog hunt a little bit ago. It wasn't cape buffalo hunting on the dark continent, but was some much needed fun time nonetheless.

The morning started off good. My hunting partner (my Dad) and I were only 10 minutes off of the blacktop when we came upon a small dog town. We set up and I had one shot and one dog down at about 125 yrds. I tell you, the more I shoot my Ruger No 1 in 220 swift - the more I love that gun.

Well things got real dead after that for a couple of hours. We tried several areas that are known dog hangouts and nobody was home. At about noon, we decided to relocate to another area. We had stumbled across this dog town last fall while scouting for an elk hunt.

When we got to the dogtown we weren't dissapointed. We set up and commenced to letting the lead fly. The dogs would go underground for a little bit then reappear. We'd do this a couple of times then move down the dogtown a 150 yards or so and go again. This was the biggest prairie dog town that I've seen in many years. It stretched for over a mile and a half, maybe two miles. I ended up taking 18 dogs and my Dad took 19. Man what a blast.

We plan on leaving the dog town alone for about a month. Then the young ones will be emerging. Well they've got a rude awakening awaiting them.

YOUR POST IS PISSING ME OFF!!!!!!!!!!!

It has been almost 3 years since i went prarie dog hunting. I think it is the most fun that you can have hunting. I mean spotting is almost as fun if not more fun than shooting. I used to go up in northern arizona and I really miss it. I remember borrowing my buddies rifle which was a sweet 6x284 and getting my first triple with a 90gr bullet.

DAMN YOU!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D

sounds like you had fun!

Never understood the desire to hunt the li'l doggies...until I was in high desert area, with holes everywhere, and piles of mini dog poo.

Then I understood! Hopefully, one day I'll be using my 6mm Remington to take some.

John

I fed a lot of red-tailed hawks one weekend.

:D

The local pet store here in Florida, called Incredible Pets, was selling prairie dogs at $125.00 a pup. I burst out laughing, and Wife #2 asked me what was so darned funny. I told her about my 3-day prairie dog hunt on the California/Oregon border a few years ago. The store owner asked me to leave, I was upsetting the soccer mommies and their progeny. I thought I had the last laugh when I told him to give me a call if they ever got loose. I *knew* I had the last laugh when the FDA banned the sale of prairie dogs after some kids caught monkeypox and tularemia from the critters. If I remember right, the pet shop owner had about 50 of the little beggars that he couldn't sell or even display.

Damn, we shot up nearly $4700 worth of prarie dogs.

That must've been my most expensive hunt ever.
