Back from Israel (lots of pics)

One day I'd like to travel to Israel for a combined hiking/sightseeing holiday. But that could turn out to be a bit costly, as almost all of my hiking gear is either OD or khaki. And I've been mistaken for a soldier before. ;)
Well, an orange rucksack cover should do the trick.

Is it possible to go hiking in Israel? I have no idea about where there are hot zones or areas where it's completely safe to travel alone. Is camping allowed?

thanks for the welcome :)

I found this website on a link originally from a-human-right.com a while ago. (dont remember how I found that website though.)

Hi stahl, I would suggest you find someone who knows the landscape very well. There are still minefields up north! (from the war with syria in 73)
You will see soldiers everywhere there. (they're cool, very casual about gun toting folks, I think you can request for a permit to carry a rifle while you are there. though the country is relatively safe. ya think guns might have to do with that :D )
Oh yeh and bring layers of clothing, weather there is as diverse as its people. One minute its freezing cold, twenty minutes down the mountian its boiling hot.

My first post here. Thank you for sharing these pictures, looks like you had a nice trip. Israel a very different place from 25 years ago when my sister lived there. She being a strong Christian saved her money, and visited there all the historic sights. She met a young Israeli there, fell in love, corresponded, and moved there a year later. They had to marry in Cyprus due to Israeli law forbidding marriage between Jew, and non-jew. She lived in Haifa, and some of their very closest best friends were Palestinian, everyone got along so well back then. So sad things have changed for the worst as far as relationships between Jews, and Palestinians especially when they have a common anchestry in Abraham. She, and her husband have been living in Paris for several years now, got out before all the violence (Intefada?) started. Are Palestinians in Israel allowed to own firearms for hunting, self-defense, etc.?

from talking to israelis there

there is barely any "civilian" ownership of weapons how we understand the concept in america. I talked to active military personnel there and they told me that once they finish their required 3 years of army service, they dont get to keep their weapons.
I noticed some folks wearing concealed handguns around, not many. (handgun)Permits are damn near impossible to get, kinda like new york city.
(Still need to do more detailed research on it)

So all the "citizens" are screwed. :(

I went to a camping store while there and was buying a rifle sling. The woman working thought I was an Israeli and asked if I was in the military and I said that I was from the US. She then asked if I was in the US military and when I said, "no, I just own guns" she got wide eyed like 'wow, that's sooo cool' haha.

I was over there in 1984. Great country; if they didn't shoot and blow each other up so often, it would be a nice place to visit longer......
