Bad Experience in Africa - Robbed at gunpoint

I WILL be going back to South Africa later this year, for my daughter's traditional South African farm wedding.

LegalAlien, while what you say is true to a certain extent, but from what I have heard though, the situation is fast spiraling out of control with NO end in sight. Johannesburg seems to be the hardest hit - as with anywhere else in the world, with some areas generally more safe than others.

Whatever you do, don't take the elevator unless you don't mind being stuck there for a few hours as the "rolling blackouts" now seem to be the routine of the day.

Getting back to the original post the naievete of the persons who were robbed is simply too enormous to fathom.

That being said I wish everyone could spend a couple of weeks trying to survive in a third world country that is out of control It would add a lot of appreciation for living in a civilized country.

Some places are simply better visited in pictures and books and movies. I only expect the exploitation of Africa to increase as other countries try to take advantage of the resources there.

Sounds like the only thing that would make a difference would be having a well-armed platoon or two as security for the trip.

We have been extremely unlucky.

Actually, I would say you have been extremely lucky. You came home alive, didn't you? All that other stuff is just stuff. Yeah, it was your stuff, and it stinks that it was stolen, but you could have come home in a box. Or, you could be lion food, or lying in a shallow unmarked grave. Stuff is nothing compared to your own life, so be grateful for that.

I am not admonishing you, just pointing out a different perspective for you to consider.
