Yesterday I took my Savage fitted with a new McGowen .260 remington barrel to the range for the first time. Even after shooting 20 rounds there is no copper fouling!! Am I breaking it in wrong???

I'm so not serious. Shots 2-6 formed a group that was .828" the second group was .692". That's with no load workup at all.

^^^^ I would start by reading that article.

The fact that your barrel shows no copper fouling means that it is very high quality barrel with very little manufacturing imperfections, and following a "break in" procedure will only prematurely wear your barrel, thus creating more business for the barrel maker who advocates a break in procedure.

I shudder to think of the premature wear caused by the 13 shot breakin recommended by Krieger and the whopping 30 shot series suggested by Pac Nor on those barrels in my guns. Of course by the time I had completed the break in, I also had rough zeroes and chronograph readings for figuring longer range sight settings. Shooting that would have been needed anyhow, even if not spread out with frequent cleaning.

But if your new barrel doesn't copper, then it is ready to go. Kreiger says their barrels benefit most from breakin at the throat where the chamber reamer scratched up their rifling and lapping.

This makes two rifles I own with McGowen barrels. I like it better than the Shilen I had and the price really wasn't much higher.

Are you guys those F-Class shooters I'm hearing so much about lately? Hats off to those guys, I just learned a lot about long range shooting this weekend and it's a really interesting sport! I'm trying to find a place within an hour or so (I'm in NJ) that offers a 1000 yard option but I don't think I am going to be able to find it. Makes me want to move out west!!!!
